These days, all parents are talking about reducing screen time for kids. I heard an interview with Sudha Murthy, a writer, and philanthropist where she says if children have to reduce screen time, we parents have to reduce screen time. Of course, we are the role models for our children and they follow us.

But, Is TV really an idiot box and should be avoided? Tv is invented for entertainment and relaxation. If we watch it moderately and not addicted to it, TV might not be that bad. What say?

With this thought, I want to write about what to watch on TV with kids. Instead of completely avoiding it, how can we utilize Tv time to be knowledgeable?

How TV time can help in learning for kids

These days, we all have smart TVs at home, which connect to wifi and have many apps installed like Netflix, Amazon prime, and Youtube. So, Television doesn't mean only the channels that we watch on cable Tv or tata sky. There are a lot more options now.

Here are some options that might help in learning new things and might not make TV time useless :

1.  Science videos from Youtube

There are many youtube channels for kids which explain basic science like the Solar system, planets, how things work, How plants grow etc., These videos are fun to watch and kids will learn something new.

We even have videos to improve vocabulary, learn how to write essays for school, how to express ourselves etc.,

2. Food-related programs

My kids love to watch 'Food Factory' channel on youtube. They enjoy learning how food is made and packaged.

There are 2 benefits due to this.

1. The programs are educational and they will know how food comes to their plate and thus they value the food they eat without wasting.
2. These videos are fun to watch with some tidbits of less known facts.

Also, There are many TV channels which air cooking shows and recipes. There are many channels which show how to grow vegetables and gardening tips. Try these and tell me if your kids liked them?

3. Travel and Geography channels

I love traveling. I want to imbibe this interest even to my kids. We love to watch travel channels together. Sometimes, we start our weekends by watching Nat Geo channel. Kids usually love animals and so they might like these programs. We also watch documentaries that they like - ex: how volcanoes are formed? How Earth is formed? Why storms occur? etc.,

Sometimes, we simply search on Youtube about travel videos of national parks and make a mental note on what to visit when we go there. Kids also compare national parks and they discuss with me if they like to hike mountains/ watch animals in the forest/play in the waterfalls.

4. Family Movies

We watch family-friendly movies on Friday or Saturday nights. There are some great movies like "Up", "Kungfu Panda", "Finding Nemo" , " Zootopia" etc., Search in Google and you will find hundreds of good movies which teach good values to the kids.

I personally love "Up", which is a beautiful movie to teach about being adventurous and never giving up in life.

5. Hobby channels and Craft videos

I enjoy making crafts with my children. It's a bonding time and we try, fail, try again and learn from mistakes. We also watch youtube videos on painting and mimic those.

There are some TV channels specific for hobbies, crafts and creating something. These are worth a try. There are also a few programs which show easy science experiments and explain the science concepts.

I know, I have written this article mostly from the perspective of smart TVs but I observed that there are a lot of good Tv channels aired on cable TV networks as well. Just take time to explore and set a limited TV time.

Do let me know in comments what would you love to watch on TV with kids.

Until next time,

Date Published: October 2017

After Bess Silver had settled into her new home in Pineview she thought her biggest problem would be settling into a new school. She was surprised to learn that it was a one room school house which was different from what she was used to.

That all changed when Megan Skye, her best friend and cousin, dashed into their kitchen late one afternoon with exciting news. Megan's father discovered an old cabin, hidden behind a wall, when he started doing kitchen renovations. Megan asked him to take the suitcases, ledgers and trunk they found over to Bess instead of throwing them out. Clues turn up in the suitcases and in a secret compartment in the cabin which leave Bess puzzled. When she first looked around the cabin she sees a ghostly figure that disappears in an instant but is as real as Megan. Dreams about the cabin and occupants haunt Bess. These feel so real that she can't shake the feeling that she was actually near them.

Who is the figure that Bess saw in the cabin? What is she trying to tell her? Why is she having dreams about the old cabin? Will Bess be able to figure  out who the mysterious figure is? Or would these secrets remain secrets forever?

The Mystery of the Hidden Cabin is the sequel to Bess's Magical Garden and can be read on it's own.

Bess's Magical Garden
Published: October 2015
Publisher: FriesenPress

Bess's mother moves them to Pineview, away from her best friend Megan, and she terribly misses her. Six months earlier, Bess’s father died in a car crash, and she’s also in the midst of recovering from the final stages of polio. She's in a sad and lonely place.

From the moment she and her mother settle into their new home, Bess hears whispering voices and encounters a ghostly figure in the well-kept garden and in her dreams. She can’t make sense of everything and so shares her observations with Megan by writing her regular letters.

During the summer, she makes new friends, including an orange and white tomcat that she names Pumpkin, and her new neighbour Josie. With the help of Mrs. O’Toole, the woman who watches her, Bess continues to recover, both physically and emotionally. She becomes more and more curious about the garden and the unexplained clues that she finds there.

In Bess’s Magical Garden, Bess discovers her own true strengths through enduring life’s struggles. She - with Josie and Megan’s help - also finds some hidden items in the garden, including a map, that leave the girls with more questions than answers. Who was the figure that visited Bess? Will Bess and her friends be able to uncover the garden’s secrets? Or will those secrets be mysteries forever?

Marjorie (M.E.) Hembroff is the author of Bess's Magical Garden, a middle grade novel and picture book Gramma Mouse Tells a Story. Marjorie is a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators,  and Writer's Guild of Alberta.

Marjorie has been an avid reader since early childhood and has always been imaginative. Growing up on a farm before television aided in her using her imagination to create a variety of pastimes. Stories formed in her mind but most of them were never written down until later in life. It wasn't until her children were growing up that she started to take art and writing courses. At that time, her writing improved and short stories formed. It was when she retired that the idea for Bess's Magical Garden surfaced.

After Marjorie's divorce she worked in the plant industry. First at a greenhouse and then looking after tropical plants in downtown offices. For awhile it looked like her adult children would never leave home but they have now all flown the nest and are having their own life's adventures. After retirement she moved to Strathmore where she lives with her pets.

5 Questions that Vegetarians are tired of Answering #MondayMusings

I am a vegetarian and I like to be a vegetarian. But, I get to hear a lot of questions from friends, relatives etc about being a vegetarian. If you are a vegetarian, please read and let me know if you too face the same questions in your life.

These are the 5 most common questions I get from friends and others who are non-vegetarians.

1. How can you eat only "Ghas-pus"? (In Hindi, it means "weeds spread in the garden/ grass)

For some people, Vegetarianism is all about eating green vegetables and grass.  I cannot change your opinion but if cooked well, vegetarian can taste great and of course, with proper dressing no salad tastes like grass.

2. Don't you ever get tempted to eat meat?

Never, Ever and Never. How can I be, when I hate meat?

Some might ask, can you eat non-veg if it is tastier than Vegetarian.

That doesn't matter anyway. For all Vegetarians, taste might not be the only reason to avoid meat. Vegetarians need not be animal lovers too. There might be other concerns like not interested to eat the flesh of animals or whatever.

For me, taste is never the criteria to avoid or choose non-vegetarian. Any meat is simply NO.

3. Do you think you can save animals by not eating Non veg?

Oh, I will never think that way. I know that one person not eating non-veg doesn't make any difference to the poultry/ meat market. Vegetarianism is a personal choice.

4. You are missing out in life. Aren't you?

No, as far as I think. Again, if I chose to miss out on something in my life, then it is not really missing, right. It is a decision.

5. The plants are being killed too. What say?

You can ignore this one. It's not worth answering. If we don't eat plants and don't breathe oxygen, How do we live? Even if we can, which is better? Eating plants or eating other animals?

Other questions that I get is that I am not getting enough protein. I am very happy that whoever asks this are really concerned about me, but there are some good high protein options in veg too. Check out this article.

By the way, I am an eggetarian. (I eat egg other than vegetables).

So, my fellow vegetarians, what do you think of these questions? My non-vegetarian friends, what is your opinion on my answers?

Until next time,

My Review:

This book is a collection of short stories in different genres, but mostly horror. Most of the stories are unpredictable and have a good twist at the end. A few are about the unique human behavior whereas a few are about the circumstances and perceptions. A few have spine-chilling horror in fewer words and a few stories are silly.

It is difficult to rate a short story collection as I absolutely loved most of the stories but also felt a few not up to the mark.

Here is my opinion on the stories I liked:

Revenge of the myth is unpredictable and is an interesting take on the old myth.
The One is, of course, unpredictable and gave a disgusted feeling about Abby and Toby.
Fear the clowns - This story misleads from the starting about the fear of clowns but gives a nice twist at the end. Good, short and perfect.
Voodoo child is a proper horror story with good narration and suspense.
The snakes or humans is a nice read about humanity with a simple plot.
Like a Spanish Guitar is spine-chilling and unpredictable.
Hangman is a fun horror story

Noisy Neighbours is definitely a different story with an unexpected ending.

Overall, I have enjoyed reading this book of short stories which is interesting and unique. This is the best book for long drives and train journeys.

My Rating: 4/5
I recommend this to the readers who love short stories with some horror.

PS: I have received a free e-review copy of the book from the author in exchange of my review and this is my honest option on the book.

My Rating System

I rate books by the 5-star rating system.

1/5: I hated it
2/5: Below average, I don't like it.
3/5: It is ok with some faults.
4/5: I liked it and I recommend it to others though it has slight imperfections.

5/5: It is awesome and I will definitely recommend it to others.

Time is the Most precious thing in the world #FridayReflections

I always believed that time is Gold. From childhood, I gave more value to time than money. I think, If we love someone, the best gift that we can give them is 'spending more time with them'.

Friends used to tell me during my school days that I manage my time well. I am good at planning, scheduling, and organizing.

The below quote changed my perspective of time. Of course, time is precious but why it seems to go fast when we are with someone we love and seems to go slow when we are bored. After all, time is different for everyone in the way they see it. Time might depend on our perception.

Time is too slow for those who wait, too swift for those who fear, too long for those who grieve, too short for those who rejoice, but for those who love, time is eternity. ~ Henry Van Dyke

Beautiful quote, right?

These days, I am struggling to get time to write. The common reason is that I don't get time due to household duties. After an exhausting India trip, there is a lot more to clean up and prepare for the children's school year. I have resumed my dance classes too after getting over my jet lag. The housework doesn't seem to end and I get a feeling like I am yet to complete loads and loads of syllabus before exams.

But then, as per the quote - Time is eternal for those who love. I think I should love my daily work and enjoy every minute without cribbing for less time.
What do you say?

Until next time,
