Rides and Fun at Disney Magic kingdom - 1 day Itinerary

Top post on Blogchatter Disney is a dream vacation for many of us—both kids and adults alike. We see the magic in the Disney movies—the grandeur, songs, sets, fireworks, dance, good story, favorite characters, and whatnot. Let's plan a one-day itinerary at the most magical place in the world.

Pin it for later!

The purpose of this post is to make your planning easy. The list of rides and activities depends largely on the age of the kids, your interests, patience for long wait times, energy, preferences, etc., This current guide is made keeping in mind for a family with 2 kids aged 9 and 11 years.

Please read this basic planning post if you are planning a vacation to Disney and Universal in Florida.

Tickets:

We purchased a 2-day ticket with admission to 1 park per day. We covered the Disney Magic Kingdom and Hollywood studios each day. This cost was around $336 for each adult in Dec 2023. Please check this link for ticket prices.

There is one more step other than the admission tickets. You need to make a theme park reservation for each date of your visit.

Install the Disney MagicMobile app. Otherwise, you may use a magicBand for park entry or stop at the Park ticket window and show the ticket confirmation email, credit card used to purchase tickets, and a government ID to get the tickets.

Accommodations:

As mentioned in my planning post, we stayed in Universal's Endless Summer resort. Since we didn't stay in Disney Resort, we had to take a cab to the park. Parking is expensive if you drive and it takes more time to park and get to the entrance.

Lightning lane passes:

Disney is most probably crowded unless it's off-season. So if you don't want to miss any special popular ride like the TRON light cycle run, you need to purchase a lightning lane single pass / multi-pass through the Disney MyExperience app.

A single pass gives entry to one ride skipping the long queues. A multi-pass lets you choose 3 rides one after the other.

Our Itinerary:

There are 4 sections in Disney Magic Kingdom, Florida - Adventure Land, Frontier Land, Fantasy Land, and Tomorrow Land.

We started walking to the left towards Adventure Land after taking a photo with the most popular Castle which is at the center of the park. This picture is a must!

In Frontierland, we just did the Big Thunder Mountain railroad.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad:

This is a wonderful roller coaster with big and small drops. So, it's good for families with kids above 6+ years as they enjoy well. But, we saw families with little kids also enjoying it.

This is the most popular ride with more crowds, so we completed it first.

Image by nobu sato from Pixabay

In Fantasy Land, we went to the show Micky's Philhar Magic.

Mickey's Philhar Magic:

This is a fantastic 3D show with songs from Disney classics. If the waits are low, it's well worth the time.

Festival of Fantasy Parade:

Please check the timings in the Disney app. Usually, the parades are in the afternoon before 2pm.

This parade is an awesome experience. It was so exciting and I felt like a kid again watching all the Disney characters parade one after the other.

I think Disney's magic is in this parade. While Mickey still is the main celebrity, the characters from Tangled, Peter Pan, and Little Mermaid also show up. The floats are big, and the decorations are great to watch.

Peter Pan's flight:

I heard this is a great ride for families with children. But, the queue is always too big, we had to skip it.

Seven Dwarfs Mine train:

We used our lightning lane pass for this roller coaster ride. We loved the ride. This is not an intense roller coaster. But, good with a few drops and twists.

Haunted Mansion:

Loved this one. Had to wait long, but it's good. Not very scary/creepy and can be done with kids. It's a fun dark ride. For little kids/ infants, this might be scary.

We had lunch at this point and walked back towards Adventure land.

Jungle Cruise:

This is the most popular ride for families. I would say, it's not that great for families with kids 6+yrs as it's not worth the time standing in lines. There is always a big queue.

This is an outdoor boat ride through jungles from around the world. This is good for families with little kids and toddlers.

Pirates of the Caribbean:

This is an indoor boat ride and a nice ride with small drops. You will enjoy this if you have watched those pirate movies and know the background.

Tomorrowland has many good rides, but by this time in the evening, the wait times are long for each ride.

Tomorrowland Speedway is just a simple go-cart for kids. Not that fun to wait more than an hour in line.

TRON light cycle/run:

TRON is the newest indoor/ outdoor coaster that everyone is raving about. But, we couldn't do it due to long wait times. This should be done in the mornings I believe, we saw long waiting at all times of the day for this.

Space Mountain:

Space Mountain is another indoor roller coaster and I heard it's great too. We couldn't do it. The architecture of the ride looked great from the outside.

Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin:

We didn't expect much from this dark ride and shooting game. But, it was surprisingly good and enjoyable.

We loved this ride as a family. 2 people can go as partners together. It's a quick ride though.

By this time, we got very tired. We had some snacks and settled on the lawn before the castle. Multiple shows were happening on the stage like the Cinderella castle show. They are excellent. The spectacular fireworks show at the end of the night is an unforgettable experience at Disney!

Nighttime Spectacular: Happily Ever After:

This show with fantastic fireworks, lights, and lasers is one of the best experiences at Disney. It's like the best fireworks that I have watched so far in my life.

Image by Kohji Asakawa from Pixabay

You can miss any ride at Disney, it doesn't matter. But, never miss this show at the end of the night. It is tiring and not really comfortable to get a place to sit and watch without interruptions, but it is worth it.

That was a perfect fitting end for us on that day. See you next with another theme park.

Until next time,

Priya loves being with family and friends to watch fireworks and celebrate Diwali. But this year Priya and her parents are living in the United States, and no one seems to know about the holiday. Priya misses the traditions in India. But as she strings lights outside and creates rangoli art, Priya introduces the festival of lights to her neighbors. And even though the celebration is different this year, it's still Diwali.

A heartwarming story of celebrating in a new place and sharing the Hindu festival of lights with those unfamiliar with the holiday.

My Review:

This is the story many immigrant kids from India can relate to. When Priya moves to USA, she misses her culture and the celebration of Diwali in US. But, a festival is just not the place, decor etc., The celebration might be different, but it keeps us connected to our culture.

There are some cultural activities as part of celebration that we do on Diwali. Rangolis, lights, sweets, traditional dresses and fireworks - there is a lot to Diwali.

How could she share her joy with Americans? Can she find her way to share Diwali in her new home? That's for us to read and know.

I liked that this story represented Diwali very well. I also liked that Priya's family invites neighbors and celebrate with them. It is not easy for immigrant kids to adjust to new place and new culture. This story helps such kids.

I agree that recommended age is 4 to 8 yrs. The illustrations are good and inclusive of different cultures. Overall, I recommend this to all curious kids who love to know more about the Indian festival, Diwali.

My Review:

That's for the free/ gifted book, @penguinrandomhouse.

This is a good bedtime story for toddlers. Kids who love to explore space will like it for sure. It's not a basic solar system facts. I liked that they mentioned some lesser known facts about each planet and also covered like 140 moons for Saturn, what are Sun spots etc.,Pluto is covered as a dwarf planet.

This is recommended for kids aged 1-3 yrs or toddlers. The illustrations are fabulous. Toddlers will love them. A board book is safe in kids hands and the quality of print is great.

Overall, would highly recommend this to toddlers who love to learn about space.

Blurb:

From the award-winning author of Yellow Wife, a daring and redemptive novel set in 1950s Philadelphia and Washington, DC, that explores what it means to be a woman and a mother, and how much one is willing to sacrifice to achieve her greatest goal.

1950s Philadelphia: fifteen-year-old Ruby Pearsall is on track to becoming the first in her family to attend college, in spite of having a mother more interested in keeping a man than raising a daughter. But a taboo love affair threatens to pull her back down into the poverty and desperation that has been passed on to her like a birthright.

Eleanor Quarles arrives in Washington, DC, with ambition and secrets. When she meets the handsome William Pride at Howard University, they fall madly in love. But William hails from one of DC’s elite wealthy Black families, and his parents don’t let just anyone into their fold. Eleanor hopes that a baby will make her finally feel at home in William’s family and grant her the life she’s been searching for. But having a baby—and fitting in—is easier said than done.

With their stories colliding in the most unexpected of ways, Ruby and Eleanor will both make decisions that shape the trajectory of their lives.

My Review:

The story is about 2 negro women Eleanor and Ruby who are smart, ambitious and want to get educated and settle well in life. The lives of women were not easy those days with no support or guidance from anyone in the family or friends. Both get pregnant before marriage and their lives change forever due to this.

This story is heart wrenching to me. Especially the episodes about the Christian home for unwed pregnant girls. It is depressing to read about how they are shamed in the name of God and how they are treated cruelly.

The narrative is engaging. The story is well researched and characters are portrayed in realistic way. Would love to read more from the same author. The ending is satisfying. The characters of Eleanor , Ruby, Aunt Marie, Rose, William and Shimmy are impressive.

Book Details:

Title: The Legendary Mo Seto

Author: A Y Chan

Genre: Children's book, Middle grade fiction

Publisher: Aladdin

Print Length: 320 pages

Source: A free review copy from the author

Blurb:

A fast-paced, high-kicking debut that’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon meets Stand Up, Yumi Chung as a young taekwondo artist uses an ancient book to help save her dreams—and her father.

Twelve-year-old Modesty “Mo” Seto dreams of being a taekwondo champion. Even though her mom disapproves, Mo can always count on her dad, who is her number one fan and biggest supporter. Lately, Mo has been on a losing streak, and it doesn’t help that she keeps losing to her archnemesis, Dax, who’s much bigger than her. If only she were faster, stronger, not so petite. Mo can’t even lean on her dad like usual with how distracted he’s been lately.

When Mo learns about the chance to audition to star alongside her idol and legendary martial artist and movie star Cody Kwok, she knows this her chance to prove to her dad, to the world, and to herself that she can compete with anyone, no matter her size. Unfortunately, Dax is auditioning, too. As Mo and her nemesis progress to callbacks, someone attempts to sabotage the movie set and Mo’s dad disappears—and both events seem linked to a mysterious book, the Book of Joy.

The book contains information on Xiaoxi Fu, a secret dance-like martial art developed by Mo’s ancestral grandmother. Armed with these secret moves and an unexpected ally, Mo embarks on a high-octane adventure to rescue her father, save the movie, and discover an unexpected joy in being small.

My Review:

This is the story of a 12 year old girl Mo Seto/ Modesty, an ambitious person training to be a Taekwondo Champion. She loses against Dax in the championship and is disappointed when her father also disappears from her life temporarily.

She finds one book about an ancient martial art at home and gets intrigued about the link between the martial art and her grandfather. With help from her friend Nacho, she tries to translate and understand the technique shown in the book.

She gets an opportunity to audition for a movie by her favorite actor Cody Kwok. Since her dad is not there to guide her and her mom is not interested in martial arts, she gets into audition by lying about her height.

Is Cody Kwok really a hero in real life? Can she realize her dream of working with her favorite actor? Where is her dad and what's the connection to the book and his disappearance? The remaining story answers all these questions.

What I loved?

The plot, characterization, narrative and twists are all very well done. The last half of the book seems like a good thriller.

Characters are genuine, honest and relatable. I love Modesty - her attitude of taking risks, and her determination to achieve something. Nacho is a lovely friend that anyone would be fortunate to have. Dax, Jun and Cody are all relatable to the persons we see in our daily lives.

I love the message from the story. A good and inspiring read for middle graders.

My Rating: 5/5

The Measure by Nikki Erlick - [Book Review]

Book Details:

Title: The Measure

Author: Nikki Erlick

Genre: Dystopia, Science Fiction, Fiction

Publisher: William Morrow

Print Length: 348  pages

Source: A copy from local library

Blurb:

Eight ordinary people. One extraordinary choice.

It seems like any other day. You wake up, pour a cup of coffee, and head out.

But today, when you open your front door, waiting for you is a small wooden box. This box holds your fate inside: the answer to the exact number of years you will live.

From suburban doorsteps to desert tents, every person on every continent receives the same box. In an instant, the world is thrust into a collective frenzy. Where did these boxes come from? What do they mean? Is there truth to what they promise?

As society comes together and pulls apart, everyone faces the same shocking choice: Do they wish to know how long they’ll live? And, if so, what will they do with that knowledge?

The Measure charts the dawn of this new world through an unforgettable cast of characters whose decisions and fates interweave with one another: best friends whose dreams are forever entwined, pen pals finding refuge in the unknown, a couple who thought they didn’t have to rush, a doctor who cannot save himself, and a politician whose box becomes the powder keg that ultimately changes everything.

My Review:

Loved this book.

The concept or theme behind the story is a very interesting point. Everyone above 21 yrs old in the world receives a mysterious package with just a string inside. Later, they all realize that the length of the string is the time left for them on the Earth. That means, short stringers die earlier and the length of the string denotes longevity.

All hell breaks loose. A few Short stringers being disappointed want to end their life and others, whereas a few long stringers become selfish and rob opportunities from short stringers as the latter are going to die soon and a few show humanity and support each other.

It seems like the author researched the scenario in different aspects of life and connected with readers well. It is interesting to read and think about how humanity reacts to such things. I remember how people reacted to covid.

I felt, the strength of the book is characterization. The pace of the book seemed slow to me. It felt boring in the middle of the book. The pace of the last part of the book is good though and the ending is fine too. The narrative is good. The book cover is ok.

My Rating: 4/5

How to spend one day at Universal Islands of Adventure, Orlando , FL

We have visited 3 Universal theme parks and 2 Disney theme parks in our vacation. The theme parks are huge and there are many awesome and not-to-miss rides. It is overwhelming to plan a trip to Disney / Universal. Please read this basic planning post before reading this 1 day itinerary of Universal Islands of Adventure theme park.

The purpose of this post is to make your planning easy. The list of rides and activities depend largely on the age of kids, your interests, patience for long wait times, energy, preferences etc., This current guide is made keeping in mind for a family with 2 kids aged 9 and 11years.

Pin it for later!

Tickets and App:

We purchased 3 park , 5 day tickets.

From Universal site, that means -

The 3-Park 5-Day Base Ticket Dated entitles one (1) guest admission to ONE (1) Universal Orlando Resort theme park per day: Universal Studios Florida, OR Universal’s Islands of Adventure, OR Universal’s Volcano Bay. Ticket is valid for any five (5) calendar days during an eight (8) consecutive calendar day period which commences on and includes the date selected. The ticket will expire in full on the expiration date printed on ticket. Unused days shall be forfeited.

Check here for ticket prices. Ticket prices will vary depending on season. Also, consider packages including accommodations and early access.

Installing the Universal App is very important for you to scan tickets at the entry, to check wait times for the rides, to navigate in the park, to check food stalls, restaurants, order food online, to check show timings etc.,

Here is the link to install Universal Android / IOS app.

Express pass:

Let's discuss about Express pass. Express Pass allows you to skip long lines especially during peak seasons like during Christmas.

All Harry Potter rides, Jurassic Park rides, Spiderman, Hulk etc., are very busy most of the time with minimum 1 hr wait times.

If you have early access and can wait for 2 hrs for not to miss rides and don't have very young kids, you might not need Express pass at all. We didn't use Express pass and it worked fine for us.

If you don't have more time to spend in the park, here are the express pass options.

Early Access:

One of the best benefits of booking a vacation package or multi-day ticket is the Early Park Admission.

Rides that might be included in early access (these will change by season and peak days):

  • Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure
  • Jurassic World VelociCoaster and
  • Harry Potter and the forbidden Journey

Park is usually open at 8am and early access is at 7am. Please check in the Universal app the day before for the correct list of rides with early access.

We got early access due to the package we booked.

Our Itinerary:

1. Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure

We first went to this popular ride and the waiting time was around 1.5 hrs or more even with early access. But, this ride is completely worth the wait. You will be sitting on bikes for this roller coaster.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/rain0975/48668561402

This is the longest roller coaster in Florida which takes 3 minutes to ride and it is scary. There is a vertical drop as well. It has a lot of thrill elements to it.

2. Harry Potter and the forbidden Journey

This is very interesting 3d simulation ride. The waiting lines also feature Harry potter characters and story.

I enjoyed it better as it really gave me the feeling of flying on the broom. Yes, little scary at a few places and it might be tough for you if you have motion sickness.

Note: We skipped Jurassic World Velocicoaster as it seemed very scary with an inverted zero gravity stall where it will send riders upside down. It seems like most exhilarating ride if you love the thrill of roller coasters. There is a lot of waiting for this as it's a popular ride. Please plan in the morning to avoid long waiting.

We also skipped The Incredible Hulk coaster which has around 7 exhilarating inversions.

We skipped Flight of the Hippogriff as we don't want another roller coaster ride.

If you want to experience Hogwarts express train, you need park to park ticket.

3. Jurassic Park River Adventure

The waiting time is little high, but it is the best ride for families. You will get little wet at the end. Not scary and a pleasant ride for whole family with a small drop at the end.

We had lunch at this point near 'Popeyes and Bluto's Bilege Rat Barges' ride. There is a restaurant where you can watch the ride while eating.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/insidethemagic/6029393963

4. Popeyes and Bluto's Bilege Rat Barges

Wear the rain coats for this ride, because you will be drenching at the end of the ride. A wonderful water ride, we really enjoyed it. This might be my most favorite family ride.

There are dryers after you exit the ride. Don't miss this ride!

We skipped Duddley Do-Right's Ripsaw falls due to big lines. But, this seemed to be an interesting water ride.

5. Pteranodon Flyers

Super cool ride. You can even do with toddlers. Not scary and enjoyable ride. This can be used as a little break as the surrounding area is a play area with climbing nets to explore.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Universal-Islands-of-Adventure-Pteranodon-Flyer-9212.jpg

6. The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman

Not scary except for a drop in the end. A fun ride with interesting story in waiting lines.

Skull Island has long waiting lines and we had to skip.

The high in the Sky Seuss trolley rides are fun for the parents with infants and toddlers.

We skipped Dr Doom's Free fall, but you can try that if you love the thrill of free falls.

Camp Jurassic is a an interesting play area for kids with slides, climbing nets to canyons and caves.

Food:

Mythos / Thunder falls Restaurant is beautiful to look at. You might need reservations to dine in. A photogenic place to explore.

The three broomsticks is a Harry potter themed dine in restaurant, but needs reservations.

Wimpy's - This is near Popeye ride with American cusuine like burgers and fries.

There are multiple restaurants at each section of the park and also fast food options.

Ordering online and picking up food always helped us to save the time.

Shows:

Islands of Adventure has 3 shows - Frog Choir (A fund show with Hogwarts Students), Oh! The Stories you will hear by Dr. Seuss Characters, and Triwizard Spirit Rally.

We couldn't catch these shows at right time.

Character Encounters:

Kids had fun meeting the Spider Man and Marvel heroes. You can meet Dr.Seuss characters, Comic characters like Popeye, Betty Poop. But, please be aware that there are long queues for meet and greets. Until unless you are a big fan, it's time consuming and can be avoided.

You can also shop for specific merchandise like Magic wands, Marvel t shirts etc.,

Photo Packages:

After you exit every ride, you can get photos. Below link has some photo packages. One day photos are around $89 which is really expensive.

Photo Packages at Universal

After all these rides, we relaxed a bit, watched the holiday lights and returned.

That's our itinerary for Islands of Adventure with early access.

We had complimentary shuttle access between the park and our resort, which is very helpful after a tiring day. Food at the resort is amazing and that made it easier to hit the bed early.

The Endless Summer resort also has a few swimming pools, a lounge area, multiple restaurants, laundry and all other basic facilities.

Here is the link to reserve Vacation packages from Universal.

The next post will cover Disney Magic Kingdom.

Until next time,
