Planning for a new home with PORCELANOSA

Are you planning your new home? Not an easy task right? Selecting tiles, wardrobes, ceilings, bathroom fittings, wall tiles.. what not? It's a big list and it needs more research for a person like me who has zero knowledge on these items.

Stumbled upon this site http://www.24kliving.com/ through a blogger contest.
#24kLiving is a luxury brand from world renowned manufacturer of kitchen and bath products 'Porcelanosa'. Porcelanosa is venturing into Asia for the first time with Kolte - Patil Developers Ltd. Porcelanosa group is spread across 100 countries with their expertise for around 40 years in manufacturing kitchen and bath products.

Now, coming to the contest run by Indiblogger and Porcelanosa i have to pick few items to build my dream home :) Let's see..

1. Floor tiles: This is the most important thing to give great look to our home. Cermaic flooring is trending these days and I love flooring which is safe for children who run and play whole day. This also gives decent look. I would select 'Anti slip flooring'. How is it? There are also other types like natural wood, natural stone, porcelaine tiles, laminate flooring and linkfloor.

2. Kitchen furniture: I dont like spending more time in kitchen. I would prefer cooking quick. But, a good looking kitchen with bright lighting and furniture improves mood to cook better. Isn't it?

3. Wall tiles : Never knew about wall tiles, thought of wall colours though :) See this metallic wall tiles, looks wonderful. Isn't it? Shine of metal always has some power of attraction.

Ceramic tiles anyway are preferred as they are easy to clean and highly resistant.

Site has different tiles like natural stone and mosaics.

4. Bathroom accessories: A beautiful bath tub, showers, sanitary ware, basins and taps. Each and every accessory need to be selected with care. This site has a collection of different types of shower settings with shower trays, columns etc., All designs are contemporary and innovative.

5. Rain showers:
Site has different beautiful designs of rain showers. Some showers has light settings to make it look cool.

I love this rain shower :)

5. Bathroom taps:
I am amazed to see these contemporary designs of bathroom taps. Designs are unique and show that this is luxury brand. Few taps have light settings to make it glow. A few has temperature control, Aren't they looking practical and innovative? Have a look at some..

6. Wardrobes and dressing rooms:
It is important that it occupies more clothes in less space while selecting a good wardrobe. Porcelanosa offers different styles that can fit into any room with different finishes like matte, stained wood etc., One of them below:

I hope, you liked these photos and it helps in planning for new home :)

Until next time,

Improve immunity with Dabur Chyawanprash!

These days, we see more pollution everywhere. Many buildings and apartments are cropping up. Fresh fields and trees are vanishing slowly. Fortunately, Both Andhra and Telangana CMs mention greening as one focus area in their agenda for development. But, we have to see how much time it takes to implement those greening ideas in our cities.

You might be wondering why I am suddenly talking about pollution and de-forestation here. All parents of young children in this generation might be thinking about these topics. Our children doesn't have a healthy, pollution-free environment as we had in our childhood. They are more susceptible to cold, cough and fever. We as kids, used to eat all types of fruits, juices, ice creams and chocolates. But, our kids easily catch cold by drinking outside water or some local ice cream or juice. I feel bad keeping my kid away from citrus fruits and sweets waiting for cold/ cough to completely reduce. Else, he gets throat infection very often. We cannot change the environment around us except for growing more trees around our house and keeping surroundings clean. We cannot protect our kids from auto mobile pollution in cities. So, what is the solution?

When I asked my doctor, he said, your child will improve immunity with good and nutritious food and slowly overcome the health problems of frequent cold, cough, throat infection and fever. There is a contradiction in this statement. Fruits are known to improve immunity, but we cannot give all types of fruits to them when child has frequent cold and cough as some aggravate cold too(like water melon, mausambi, orange, grapes, custard apple etc.,). Doctor suggested me to give only pappaya, suppota, mango when child has cold). When I was researching on other food items which improve immunity, my uncle suggested me to use Dabur Chyawanprash. Oh! how come I forgot this Ayurvedic medicine which is tasty? Now I remember that my father used to give 1 spoon of Chyawanprash daily to me and my sister. Thanks to my uncle for reminding this.. It helped my kid to improve immunity to greater extent and he doesn't get sick often now!

Chyawanprash has herbs like amla, Giloy(guduchi) and more than 40 other natural ingredients. It strengthens body's natural defence mechanism by stimulating natural killer cells. Natural killer cells increase immunity by fighting with infections and virus in the body.

A healthy child makes a happy home. What do you say? If child is healthy, it brings peace and happiness to the parents as this is the primary concern for them.I hope you too would try the same for your children if they fall sick often. :) Let me know if there are any other products like these which improve immunity naturally.

Until next time,

Travel - Inspiration from Fragrance #InspireAFragrance

This post is written for contest #inspireAFragrance from Godrej and indiblogger.

Who doesn't love taking a break by going to a misty hill station? Iam thinking about what all the memories that we enjoy other than travel while visiting hill stations. This contest from Godrej made me think about fragrance. Of course, there are many memories attached to different smells that we experience during travel. Iam talking about good smells only here :p

Refreshing eucalyptus oil fragrance: I love the refreshing smell of Eucalyptus oil when i travel to hill stations or having a walk or trekking in forests. We all know, this oil has many medicinal benefits and one of them is to cure bronchitis and nasal congestion by breathing its vapor. It is also effective in reducing fever and treating fungal infections. But, i feel, just breathing it gives peace to the soul. Isn't it refreshing?

Smell of mud in rain: Wow! i hope, many of you love this smell like me :) The smell from mud that comes just when it drizzles or just before it starts to rain is too good..

The smell of Flowers: Jasmine flowers are mostly wore by Asian women in hair. Their sweet smell spreads to hair and also cools the brain. Also, jasmine flowers are used in many perfumes and to prepare tea. Rose is the king of all flowers, what say? Their fragrance might be the reason why men choose it to propose their love :) Extensively used in spas also right? Usually, we will have flower shows or rose gardens in many hill stations like ooty, kodai and Shimla. Visit for sure next time..

There are many other smells that inspire me - mysore sandal agarbathi, sweet smell of hot chocolate, oils/ creams that they use in spa and massages etc.,

Thanks for Godrej for this cool contest #InspireAFragrance which made me re-live those memories with sweet fragrance :)

Until next time,

Childhood memories with Nature

Many of us have very good memories with nature in our childhood. At least, I have a few as my grandmother’s house is in East Godavari district which is famous for its coconut trees and greenery.  It is not a village actually, a mandal head quarter. Our grandparent’s house is a big house with 3 portions where 3 families can live together happily. The house has a big garden behind with all types of trees you can think of, our favorite ones being mango, guava, orange and Nandivardhanam trees. We cannot assume these kinds of houses in modern days and can mostly hope for a balcony with many artificial plants in flower pots arranged as per our taste.

hibiscus flower in our grandma's garden

Our bond with nature developed slowly, as it became part of our life in many ways.

For ex:

  • All cousins used to gather in our grandmother’s home for summer holidays and we used to play hide and seek behind different trees and varieties of plants.
  • Our cousin’s duty was to cut raw mangoes from tree with stones and our duty is to get salt and chilly powder from kitchen without any elders knowing it :) and then of course eating them together :)
  • Daily fetching water from hand pump (borewell), plucking flowers for Puja especially bright red hibiscus flowers, yellow, white, orange chrysanthemums and white nandivardhanams which give a pleasant fragrance throughout, watering the plants in the evening, trimming them etc are a few fun tasks we all used to do. You can assume the amount of exercise it gives to the body in pollution free weather :)

I feel, today’s children miss out all this fun in cities as we don’t have gardens behind each of our flats/ apartments and we don’t have time to enjoy the nature. Travelling to scenic places or hill stations might be a good way to enjoy nature. How about travelling to Goa, Kerala, Coorg, Uttarakhand, Shivalik Hills in Punjab, Maharashtra, Sikkim etc., When did you see a Sun rise / Sunset peacefully enjoying it?

Other option could be introducing kids to this site.. welcome to Kissanpur :) I know, what comes to your mind by the name 'Kissan', none other than the mixed fruit jam and tomato ketchup.. yummy :D This site has a guide to grow tomatoes at home, that too with tips for kids. What a fun it is, to introduce mother nature to kids with small tasks!

So, register your kids in the site to grow up juicy tomatoes and for a chance to have their photo featured on Kissan tomato ketchup bottles.. Let me know about your journey :)

Until next time,

Traditional knowledge for natural growth

Traditional knowledge comes in handy many a times, especially when we have children in our house. Even a small illness in very young children becomes a problem, as they cannot express it like elders do. For example, think about cold and problem in breathing for a kid of 2 years or below age. We cannot give strong allopathic medicines to them, as they are very sensitive. This is the reason people follow and use the knowledge they receive from elders and forefathers of the family.

India is an ancient country and 'Ayurveda',  which means 'Science of Life' , an Indian system of medicine is originated from here. So, there are many practices and traditions followed here based on Ayurveda to improve health and lead peaceful life. I never thought about these Ayurvedic and homeopathic treatments earlier, though we used to follow them in our family from childhood. But, now being a parent of young kid, i realize the importance of them.

Some customs which help in good health:

1. Oil massage - Elders do oil massage to the children daily before bath to make their muscles strong and bones flexible.  This helps in overall physical growth of babies. Dabur Lal Tail is being used by many for massage of babies and here is the link about the medicinal benefits it gives. Dabur Lal tail is seesame oil with ayurvedic ingredients like camphor, ratanjyot, sankhapushpi and urad.
Oil massage before bath during festivals is also a tradition here even for adults.

2. Deworming for children - As a tradition, my grand mother used to prepare a paste of neem leaves, make it a small ball and used to give us once a year. Even though we hated those days, it was said to be a good de-worming agent. Other De-worming agents are Ajwain, garlic, turmeric, black pepper, asofoetida etc.,

3. Natural hair growth - I have a long black curly hair from childhood and it is very difficult to manage. I used to wonder how it was that black and shiny on those days. My grand mother used to apply hibiscus flowers paste before hair wash, which used to make it smooth, shiny and black.

4. To avoid viral fevers, cold and cough: Grounded tulsi leaves are given to children regularly to make them immune to frequent cold and coughs. Massaging on chest with hot oil with melted camphor, making kid drink water boiled with ginger, jeera and karakkaya(Indian galnut or inknut) powder with honey are some of the tips to avoid cough.

Above tips are a few examples of traditions which were set to improve our health. I know, there are many others.. Sometimes, it is good to know these tips and follow them for better results instead of only relying on vitamin tablets. What do you say? Please share your opinion in comments :)

Until next time,

Immunity in children

It's raining cats and dogs in Hyderabad from few days. Chilling weather, increased traffic and bad roads make the mood worse. If even adults are prone to flu, cold, cough in this weather, think about children. My kiddo is below 3 years and he easily catches cold and cough. It worries me a lot, when he suffers from cold/ cough, as this doesn't go away easily without staying for at least one week making him weak :(. I think, this is the age children should get nutritious food to improve their immunity.

Iam searching a lot in the web these days on how to boost immunity in children. Iam also talking to many colleagues and friends asking some natural medicines or home remedies available. Some home remedies that i could collect to avoid frequent cold and coughs and to boost immunity are :

1. Heat the coconut oil and add camphor to it until it becomes slightly warm. Rub this on the chest of the child if suffering form severe cold and having problem in breathing.

2. Add very small amount of turmeric in milk that child drinks regularly.

3. Dabur Chyawanprash is said to be a natural immunity booster. This is being followed from long time in India. Check this link for more information on this product. It is available in different flavours now :)

4. Ginger, Garlic and honey are also immunity boosters, so try to include them in child's diet.

5. Make sure kid gets enough sleep.

6. Include carrots, cabbage, leafy vegetables, citrus fruits and nuts in child's diet.

7. Basil leaves are very good, so let him chew at least 2 leaves daily.

Any more inputs friends? Any home remedies that you know? Please let me know in comments.

Until next time,

A Great Drive - entry for Michelin Pilot Experience by [Mahathi Ramya]

There are many memorable road trips by car. Due to some good reasons, we traveled to Warangal many times from Hyderabad by Car. This is about our first drive to Warangal.

It was around 4 years ago. My husband and myself were excited about first long drive together. We were listening to FM throughout and enjoying the ride. Roads were not as good as they are now to Warangal, there was no 4 lane road at that time. There were many speed breakers on the way which used to pop up unexpectedly killing the speed :) So, overall it was bumpy ride throughout.

It was the return journey to Hyderabad which was fun. We went to Warangal for weekend and planned to return by Sunday night. But due to heavy rain, we stayed on sunday night and started very early next day at 5Am to Hyderabad. After some distance, there was complete fog and visibility has reduced to almost zero. We were going very slow. At some point, we thought we made a wrong decision by starting that early. We didn't expect that much fog. Thought of stopping for sometime, but slowly fog cleared making the road visible. So, slowly confidence increased and we were driving fast. When we were driving with good speed around 120 / 140 km/hr there was an unexpected sharp turn, my husband just saw at the right time and controlled the speed :) Thank God! Tyres screeched like hell and gave big sound, but he could handle it well.
Warangal
Driving fast on known routes was never a problem, but sudden speed breakers and sharp turns on unknown routes are dangerous to handle with speed. Later, we went many times to Warangal, never faced any problem again. Now, roads are very good, we have 4 lane road till half of the distance,  which makes the ride a memorable experience.

There are many trips like this when I thought It's the best trip of my life. Some of the other good trips were to Bangalore and Srisailam by car from Hyderabad. Do you have any such memorable trip? do share in comments :)

There is a contest too to share these memorable road trips.. Here is the link :)

A perfect 10 day plan - Road trip - Part I

This is the plan for a road trip by car for 10 days from Hyderabad to Coorg.
You may ask, how we can get that long leave, it’s impossible :) I suggest, Aug 9th to Aug 18th. Aug 9th will be a holiday for Ramzaan for most of us and as we know, Aug 15th is a holiday for our Independence Day. So, taking leave for 4 days will give us a holiday trip for 10 days :) what say?

Here goes Part I of plan..

Day 1 – Aug 9th : Start early by around 5 Am to Bangalore from Hyderabad. You may reach Kurnool in 2 hrs or atmost 2.5 hrs, where you can stop for a breakfast. After refreshing, drive for a continuous stretch via Anantapur,.. you will reach Bangalore by afternoon, at most by 2 PM. Check in to the hotel, take sumptuous lunch and have enough rest till 4 Pm. You can visit ISKON temple in the evening after 5PM, which will be a pleasant experience that one should never miss in Benguluru. Head to famous Lord Hanuman temple near ISKON in Mahalakshmi layout.  Have some snacks after that, and head to Kemp fort, which is a Giant Shiva temple with exhibition on Jyothirlingas. This is an awesome place to visit in the evening. There are some nice restaurants around Kemp fort, where you can have dinner and return to hotel.

Day 2 – Aug 10th : If possible, start by 7 or 8 Am after breakfast, to Big bull temple in Basavanagudi and drive towards Lalbagh after darshan. Lalbagh botanical garden is excellent during flower show, which is in January month; else, it is not that great, so you may think of skipping it and covering Visweswarayya museum. Have lunch around this place, take rest in cubbon park for sometime. Covering Visweswarayya museum will be tiresome  to anyone as it needs a lot of walking.

Mysore Maharaja palace
Day 3 - Aug 11th : Must see attractions in Mysore are Chamundi hills, Mysore palace and Brindavan gardens. Start by 7Am from Bangalore to Mysore, have breakfast in the middle and reach Chamundi hills directly. After darshan, drive to Mysore palace, but have enough food, as it is a very big palace and needs more walking :) St.Philomenus church in Mysore is also a good place to cover. After lunch and some rest, head to Brindavan gardens by 5 or 6 Pm, as  it will be pleasant at that time. There will be laser show, you can roam, have snacks, do boating and take rest in the lawns. Laser show and dancing water fountains with colors are big attractions.

Day 4 - Aug 12th : Srirangapatna is famous for Lord Vishnu (Sri ranganathaswamy) temple, which is around 22kms from Mysore. His magnificent idol made from black stone is excellent. Tipu sultan's summer palace is also a place to look for. Another lovely place near by is Balmuri/ Belmuri falls. It is not a huge waterfall though. There is also Ranganthittu bird sanctury near Srirnagapatnam. Depending on time, our patience and energy level, one can cover many places of these kind in and around Mysore.
Nisarga dhama forest resort

Day 5 - Aug 13th :Coorg is around 118 kms from Mysore, it may take around 2.5 hrs to reach. Orange county is a famous resort there, but there are also many  home stay options available which we can book online. Nisargdhama is a forest resort, which is an excellent place for natural beauty and there is an elephant safari just next to it. Don't forget to visit Tibitan monastery in Kushal nagar. There are many other good places in Coorg, which i will cover in next days of plan. Meanwhile, it is best to taste the traditional kodava cuisine.
Budhist monastery

But one caution.. Rainy season may not be the best time to visit Coorg as it is difficult to visit places and trekking cannot be done. Best season to visit is Oct to Apr.
Part II of plan here..

Until next time,

10 life lessons learned from my Father

Usually, for a girl child, Her father is dearer than mom. This might be because dad pampers you whenever mother scolds you. I think, most girls accept to the fact that they are daddy's child till teenage. Girls realize the importance of their mom after teenage or after marriage. They understand her better at this stage when they become a mother herself.

Even though this post is not in time for father's day,I would love to take this opportunity to list my top 10 life lessons learned from my father.

‘I am writing ‘10 life lessons I learned from my father’ at Parentous.com‘

- Dedication to work

I haven't seen any other employee who is as dedicated as him at work. He feels he should do justice for every rupee of his salary.

- Loving unconditionally

He loves his family unconditionally. He never laid out strict rules at our home, always made us learn good habits by teaching with patience.

- Silence and patience help in difficult situations

I never saw him shout at us with angriness. He takes up the silence, thinks calmly before taking any action. He never lets his angry out and hurt others.

- Preserve culture and traditional arts

He likes and respects our culture, arts etc., He encouraged us to learn art forms like dance, music, painting and wants us to pass on these to our next generations.

- Educate children on basics and mother tongue

He never believed on sending us to tuition for studies. He taught us basics of Telugu, Hindi, and English. He used to make us solve cross word puzzles, maths puzzles, used to encourage us to participate in essay writing competitions and debates.

- Planning budget for every month and knowing our expenses is necessary

He used to prepare a budget plan every month to track the expenses. He was not a miser at all, but he says this is a good habit to know the expenses that we can cut off and save for bad times.

- Health is mightier than wealth

He takes care of his own and family's health, encourages us to eat all kinds of fruits and vegetables. He didn't have one bad habit and walks a lot regularly.

- Do whatever you can, and then only pray to God for help

My father always believes that we should work hard and then only ask for God's help. We shouldn't simply pray God without working anything.

Donate/ help but don't publicize

We should help needy people, but shouldn't expect anything in return or publicize before others about our mighty deed. My father doesn't encourage beggars, but he would prefer to provide them some food instead of throwing them a few coins.

Trust your family

He trusts us more than anything in the world. He believes that we follow the right path and cannot prove him wrong.. and that's how we are :)

These are a few that I think, I learned from my dad.. There might be many qualities that I wouldn't have recognized yet.. Let's see.. there is more time to learn from a wonderful dad :)

Until next time,

A perfect weekend party

Written for Kitchens of India contest from Indiblogger.in

A weekend party becomes perfect when you have good friends to chat, fantastic music and tasty food. What say? Any party without any of these?

If i have to host a party, i would prefer it to be in my home. First i would see that my home is clean, i would decorate it with few scented candles (of course, not reachable to children :)) and flower vases. I will select to play a pleasant music in the background, say some instrumental by AR rehman/ Illayaraja.

I would like to invite our family friends and my bestest friends with whom I can share and remember beautiful memories of childhood days and chat for long time.

Now, coming to food, i go for traditional Andhra food which includes a sweet (payasam with semiya), mango pickle, Veg biryani, Mirchi ka salan, Onion raitha with grated carrot and tomato, Tomato dal, A variety of brinjal curry (Gutti vankaya), Lady fingers fry, Sambar/ rasam and curd. A simple delicious dessert would be Gulab jamun with Vanilla ice cream. Ok, menu seems great na.. :) But, iam not a very good cook, so might be difficult without the help of these products from Kitchens of India.

For mirchi ka salan, this instant is fantastic. Just heat and serve :) There is another simple product 'Vegatable biryani mix' for just Rs.40/-. I prepare biryani in traditional style, frying all spices with Vegatables, Pudina and Ginger garlic paste and cooking with rice, but adding 2 spoons of this mix will give the required flavor that it needs :) When it comes to Non-veg section, iam very poor in cooking, so, would love to try butter chicken mix.

So, my party would be simple with easy to cook and tasty dishes. What do you say ?

Until next time,

Dream for a beautiful hair

Tell me, which girl doesn't like to have a beautiful long, black hair? (like which is shown in clinic plus ad :)) From childhood, I always wanted to have a healthy, black and silky hair. I saw people with curly hair dreaming for silky hair and people with silky hair dreaming for beautiful curls. It's so natural :) Both curly and silky hair has their own advantages when it comes to looks and maintenance.

I have  frizzy, dry and  unmanageable 100% curly hair. Combing the hair daily itself is a big task. Till my 12th standard, my mother was the sufferer. She used to comb my hair with patience. Curly hair is prone to tangles, dryness, splits at the end and so, more hair fall. Frequent oiling, using a good shampoo and conditioning are important for my hair to avoid frizziness and splits at the ends. Sometimes, i used to joke on my hair that

  • It is a concrete jungle and if a mosquito or any insect sticks to it, it cannot come out easily and will die for sure before coming out.
  • You need to have a glass of glucose water to get enough energy to comb my hair without any tangles

There are positives too :)

  • You can go out after applying oil to your hair without any problem. As hair will be basically dry, will not make your face oily.
  • No need to use hair pins to pin flowers. They will stick to your hair and very difficult to remove also later. :)

People who see my hair will always feel like I have a thick hair and be jealous as it will be bushy. No one knows actual thickness of my hair unless I do ironing (only in such case, it will be thin)

Now, you might have understood how dry and frizzy my hair was. I have tried several shampoos and conditioners of different brands like Clinic plus, sun silk, Biotech, Loreal, Matrix etc, tried different hair spas, deep conditioning, permanent straightening and also ironing from good parlours, but nothing of much use. Permanent straightening which is supposed to last for at least one year, lasted just 8 months for me. So, the dream of soft, silky hair has remained only a dream forever.

One fine day, I came across Dove shampoo and conditioner specific for 'dryness care' and 'damage care'. I didn't have much hope but tried it. I could see the difference. Frizziness reduced and hair is becoming soft after shampoo and conditioning. Now, hair is manageable. I couldn't believe that this brand suits my hair, as i tried international best brands like Loreal earlier. Whatever may be the reason, this specific product worked for me and that was the end of my hair problems!

There is an awareness quiz by Dove to know which product suits your hair. Here is the link. Try for sure, it may help.

How about you? Do you have any hair problems? how you solved them? Please do share your opinion in comments.
