After being threatened by a Bangalore mob boss, a retired Indian businessman Mohan Ranga Rao makes a vow: if he somehow gets out of the situation, he will thank the gods by going on Kailash Mansarovar, a holy mountain pilgrimage in Tibet. What starts out as merely a challenging high-altitude trek soon becomes a life-changing adventure. With a blend of humor, honesty, and keen insight, Mohan journeys toward a deeper understanding of the world around him.

A memoir of a road less traveled and a true story of self-discovery at 18,000 feet.

My Review:

Inner Trek is a travel memoir of Mr. Mohan Ranga Rao, a businessman in Karnataka, India. The book is specifically about the Mt. Kailash Parikrama (Circumbulation) and the visit to Manasa Sarovar lake. This trip is considered holy and auspicious by many religions including Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism.

This trip is not only sacred as Lord Shiva's adobe, considered a once-in-a-lifetime experience but also very dangerous due to the unpredictable weather at high altitudes.

The author mentions in the prelude itself that he is not a religious, but a spiritual person and he is taking this trip seeking an adventure. Eventually, he experiences a spiritual inclination at the end of the trip. He feels insignificant and small leaving all his ego before the majestic mountains in the treacherous trip.

The trek around Mt.Kailash covering 52 km in 3 days through the highest pass Dolma La reaching an elevation of 18000 ft above sea level is an impossible task for a normal person without fitness. Even for a fit person, the high elevation, and less oxygen might become dangerous if they are not acclimatized to the altitude.

What do I like?

I usually don't read non-fiction and I don't quite enjoy that genre unless it feels honest. I liked this book as I felt the author's experience was genuine. Unlike some biographies/memoirs that gravitate towards boasting about their good qualities, the author of this book focused more on the Mt Kailash trip and his experience keeping the unnecessary details to a minimum.

Like many other Hindus, I also learned and read a lot about Mt.Kailash and this impossible trek. The mystery of the mountain attracts me to learn more. I am happy to have read this book and to know about the weather, sherpas helping the trekkers, treacherous conditions affecting the trip, the people visiting from places around the world, the beauty of nature and the experience of people who could complete circumambulation, etc.,

The photos printed in the book and the maps gave an idea of the trek and helped me to imagine the beauty of the place. By the end of the book, I was elated and had the great satisfaction of knowing about the myths, legends, and facts about Manasa Sarovar. The book is riveting throughout and I never felt bored reading it.

A few snippets that I liked from the book:

There is nothing that I didn't like about this book. It gave me immense satisfaction and I would recommend this book to many other readers who love to read about Mt Kailash and the experience of trekking the Manasa Sarovar. I would also recommend it to the readers who want to know about this life-changing adventure and the spiritual significance of this holy pilgrimage.

My Rating: 5/5

My Review:

The instant pot has made our lives easier - it takes just one pot, no spills, is easy to clean, carries multiple tasks like steam, pressure cook, ferment, etc.,

I use instant pot to make biryani, dal, fermentation of idli/dosa batters, and yogurt. But, I didn't know for what other recipes I can use this instant pot.

Pavani's book is both for beginners of the instant pot and also for people like me who are using it for some recipes. This is also for beginners in Indian cooking. Pavani introduces us to spices, lentils, legumes, and other ingredients used in Indian cooking.

The book is categorized into appetizers, dal and bean dishes, rice dishes, curries and stews, vegetable and grain dishes, and staples.

I am familiar with a few curries, dal, and rice dishes, but never tried appetizers, grain dishes, and stews with Instant pot. Vegetable Momos seemed interesting to try. Spicy tomato rasam seemed easy and useful for everyday cooking.

I would love to try Rajma masala and Chana saag next time. I liked the recipes of Paneer Makhani and Baingan masala in the curries section.

Hearty Vegetable and Grain dishes have a wide variety of recipes like Hakka noodles, Indian-style Mac and cheese, Indian-style burrito bowls, and Vegetable Frittata.

I tried the Vegetable Biryani from the book as it is quick to make on weekend evenings.

I loved the design on each page of the book. Tip about how to make the recipe Vegan is useful. Some recipes also have cooking tips and variations. I loved the way the author mentioned the combinations to pair the recipe with.

The photos for the recipes are appealing.

My Rating: 5/5

I recommend this to all who love to try Indian recipes on Instant pot.

Adventure by Chicken Bus: An Unschooling Odyssey through Central America by Janet LoSole - [Book Review]

Title : Adventure by Chicken Bus: An Unschooling Odyssey through Central America

Author : Janet LoSole

Genre : Memoirs, Non-Fiction

Publisher : Resource Publications

Print Length : 217 pages

Blurb:

Embarking on a homeschooling field trip to Central America is stressful enough, but add in perilous bridge crossings, trips to the hospital, and a lack of women’s underwear, and you have the makings of an Adventure by Chicken Bus…a tale of one family, buckling under a mountain of debt, who sells all worldly possessions and hits the road.

Adventure by Chicken Bus demonstrates how to travel sustainably, but more importantly, how to nurture the next generation of environmentalists and social justice activists by exposing them to the conditions faced by those in the developing world.

From a remote monkey sanctuary tucked into an enclave on the Panama-Costa Rica frontier to the overdeveloped beaches of the Mayan Riviera, we endure chaotic border crossings, infections and injuries, learn about the history of the civil war in Nicaragua, visit UNESCO heritage sites, and hike the ancient Mayan temples of Tikal in Guatemala.

For the sake of safety, we plan our route down to the kilometer, navigating the region by chicken bus, an eye-opening mode of public transportation ubiquitous in the developing world. Along the way we re-connect with each other, re-kindle our commitment to the environment, recognize the privilege into which we were born, and become compassionate global citizens.

My Review:

A couple leaving their jobs as school teachers in Canada travel to Costa Rica with their 2 kids to work at an organization that saves endangered sea turtles. This is their story of homeschooling their children while learning the native cultures of the places they visit to live like a local with meager income without any luxuries like electricity and a refrigerator.

This is about their travel experiences and their hurdles. This is kind of a homeschooling field trip but a long one to Central America.

While reading the book, at some points I got a chill in my spine, when they had to stay in musty, Narrow rooms, travel in overcrowded buses without enough air to breathe, when their daughter misses an accident in seconds, etc.,
I appreciate and understand  Janet and Lloyd's interest in community-based travel supporting local businesses and homeschooling their kids.👏

Why the name Chicken bus? 🐔🐣

Chicken Bus is a colloquial term used to describe the run-down, discarded school buses from North America sold to Latin American countries, where they are repainted in bright colors, outfitted with stereo speakers, and upcycled with more seats to accommodate more people with their potatoes, avocadoes, and chickens.

What's great?

Loved the book cover and the title is appropriate. The map at the beginning of the book is very helpful to understand the route they travel and the places they visit.

The Author's passion to homeschool their kids by showing the local people and their culture are worth an appreciation.

What might have been better?

I felt the book is too verbose. Some photos might have made reading easier.

The font might have been larger.

The book ends with this line which I agree 100%
" Yes, The Chicken buses, crammed full and whistling down a bumpy road, unveil a great deal indeed"

My Rating: 4/5

From Fostercare to Millionaire by Cody McLain - [Book Review]

Book Details:

Title : From Fostercare to Millionaire
Author : Cody McLain
Genre : AutoBiography, Parenting & Relationships, Memoir
Print Length : 332 pages
Source : A free print copy in exchange for a review

Blurb:

Cody's story offers all the components you'd expect from the success story of a young entrepreneur with Aspergers-motivation, drive, perseverance, focus, and passion.

You might call it a rags-to-riches tale, and you wouldn't be wrong. But that here-to-there narrative is only the top layer.

Cody's story unfolds to reveal a narrative that is more complicated and yet simpler, more central, to the human experience.

What remains is the story of a boy, burdened like all of us with deep wounds and great gifts, searching for a purpose. What remains is a story that will inspire readers to find their true calling and work like hell to achieve their dreams.

My Review:

I am usually not into biographies and memoirs, but I loved this book. This is not preachy but genuine.

Cody's life is an inspiration to many and this book sure motivates us. Cody's story proves that when there is a will/desire, there will definitely be a way to achieve it. Irrespective of multiple failures, with very little family support, no good friends and no educational support, Cody achieves success in his business through hard work and perseverance.

While we see that these generation kids disappointed by small failures and give up so easily, this book will surely be a motivation for them.

What I liked?

The narration is genuine, authentic, inspiring and we could really feel what's happening in Cody's life. It is motivational to read about someone who didn't give up even after he fails in the business which he builds from scratch. For any other person, it is a big deal to overcome this and start anew.

The photos of the people and places in the book helped with understanding the circumstances better.

What might have been better?

The whole book is good except for the last 2 chapters. The last chapters felt like they were written in a hurry. I would have loved to read more about what happened after selling the company.

My Rating: 4/5

PS: I have received this book for free in exchange for a review and this is my honest opinion on the book.

About the Author:

After starting his first company at the age of 15, Cody has gone on to start a string of successful (and unsuccessful) businesses, many of which grossed millions.

Today, Cody is the founder of SupportNinja, a company which employs hundreds of people worldwide and services some of the biggest names in Silicon Valley. He has been featured on Forbes, Mashable, Entrepreneur and more for his expertise in Entrepreneurism, Productivity, and Outsourcing.

Power, Beauty and Legitimacy of Adolescence by Susan Jane - [Book Review]

My Review

This is the best non-fiction book that I read recently. Usually, parents are afraid to handle teen kids. Either it is generation gap or communication problem, parents and teenage kids struggle to be on the same page. While teens take rash decisions, Parents seem to control them more, the relationship strains a lot.

The author starts by explaining basics like the physical and psychological changes that happen during puberty and the impact of those changes on teens. Since the author is a teacher to teen kids with an experience of handling teenage children, observing them closely for a long time in her career, she could explain the subtle changes in the behavior of kids with logical reasoning.

The book is organized very well with the following topics in the order - explaining what is adolescence, some common mistakes parents make, how Parents can have the right attitude, how to handle unaccepted behaviors in teens and other teenage issues.

There is a lot of material in the book that is helpful for parents. I even underlined a few sentences of the book to read later when needed.

One thing that can be improved is that there can be more interactive material or practical examples. Of course, there are many practical examples in the later part of the book than the first part. The statistics mentioned in the book are excellent and helpful. More images might have been good though.

I will definitely recommend this book to all parents.

My Rating: 5/5

PS: I have received this book in exchange for a review from the publisher through authoright and this is my honest opinion on the book.

Author Information

I was born in Geneva from an English mother and an Italian father who both had come to Switzerland to work in international organisations. I travelled a lot when I was young visiting my two families in London and Rome. I went to school in Geneva and after one year spent in England in an Art School, I went to Geneva university where I got a masters degree in English, French and Italian literature. I started teaching during my studies and never stopped. I got married and had 4 children. Today I am still a teacher but am also responsible for teacher training in my school and at university. I have been living for 8 years with my American partner whom I had dated when I was a teenager. After having gone our separate ways we reconnected later in life and are living happily together in Geneva although we spend a lot of time in California.

My eldest son is an architect in Geneva, my eldest daughter has just obtained a bachelor at Brunel University in digital design, my youngest son is studying economics in Lausanne and my youngest daughter is enjoying a gap year doing voluntary work in Costa Rica and New Zealand before starting medical school.

We all get on well and are considered by friends and relatives as a “fusional” family, whatever that means…

I started writing articles at the age of twenty for an animal journal when part -time working in a zoo. A few years later I wrote a collection of children’s stories. I recently decided to write a book on adolescence in French which was published in November 2018, I then made a longer adaptation of it in English and have currently finished the Italian version.

Stop Being Invisible by Dr. William Lane - Book Spot Light

 photo 410pad1gBuL_zpsfdw9bsgx.jpg

Non-Fiction / Speaking & Communication / High Functioning Autism
Date Published: September 12, 2018

Stop Being Invisible - Overcoming Communication Barriers comes to us from Dr. William Lane, global educational consultant.  He has spent over 35 years providing educational services, first working in public education as an elementary, middle and high school teacher and school administrator; and then later as a university professor and department chair of special education programs.  He has dedicated his life’s work to educating students and improving their opportunities for success in life.  Having experienced firsthand the pain of missed opportunities that were a direct result of his limited ability to communicate effectively from childhood until well into adulthood, his passion about this subject shines through as he very effectively communicates in this book how to improve not only the quality of your communications with others, but also your resulting experiences in life.

His “WHY” to answering his calling to not only work on changing his own communication challenges, but to focus his work on improving the struggles of others, occurred one day when during a conversation, it was brought to his attention that people often jokingly referred to him as a “weatherman.”  Thinking it odd, he questioned what was meant by that name. He was told that people avoided talking to him because usually, the only time he contributed to a conversation was when he asked about how the weather was.  He realized that he was choosing to participate in conversations by becoming a “non-participant.”  Whether in the role of boyfriend, husband, dad, brother, uncle, cousin, friend, coach or any of the many other roles in life he had assumed, few people had been able to understand his non-communicative style.

The response was not kind, but it did become a major wake-up call.  This powerful and descriptive one-sided revelation of how others felt about having him as part of their conversations made him realize that it was time for drastic changes.  He is no longer called “the weatherman,” and has gone on to guide many others with communication barriers to adopt effective communication skills resulting in the deeper connections that come from great conversations.

About the Author

Throughout Dr. Lane’s thirty-five-year educational career, his passion has always been providing information, practice, and support to individuals with special needs.

He believes that everyone, in their own way, can become a contributing and productive member of society and that effective communication is the most important of all life skills.   Improved communication skills improve the quality of life for all, not just individuals with special needs.

Dr. Lane is a proficient, dynamic, and sought after public speaker and speaks to audiences around the world.  His focus is educating individuals, families, and educators on the “awesome power” of effective communication skills.  He inspires his audiences to practice, discuss, and encourage others to improve their communication skills, while demonstrating practical ways to understand, retain and apply the skills he teaches.

Once these skills are understood, retained (through practice and reflection), and utilized, those who apply the life skills that are taught will feel more confident and better able to CONNECT with others in a variety of circumstances and setting

India : Whose country is it anyway? by APS Kumar - Book Spot Light

About the Book:

India's rich diversity, both in its physical and natural aspects, is widely known. India has had a great past with achievements in literature, the arts, medicine and mathematics.

Indians were sea-faring and they spread their influence through their philosophy, religion and military conquest too. But Like a cosmic phenomenon, decline is every civilization is inevitable. Indian civilization too declined.

When a civilization rises, people are driven by idealism; when people are possessed of greed, it declines and falls.

Indians today are possessed of excessive, abominable, putrefying greed.

The author tells it all in an honest, engaging manner. He holds a mirror unto ourselves.

Read an Excerpt:

Chapter 1

Happiness is a Journey
The whole world is seeking happiness. In fact, it seems like
we are all on an eternal journey to destination happiness. Yes, happiness is a
journey, but not many people know that it is the path itself. You cannot get
happiness, but you can be happy. While there is no one on earth who doesn’t
seek this treasure, there are only a few who truly understand what happiness
is.

Do you know that you
can choose to be happy or unhappy? Happiness doesn’t just happen; it is a
choice you make
”  -RVM

What is Happiness?
Happiness is a state of mind. It’s a state of
joy, bliss and cheer. It is an emotion- energy in motion- that makes one glad,
just as unhappiness is an emotion, that makes one sad. A happy person is joyous
and he smiles and laughs just as unhappy person frowns and cries. We feel happy
and it shows. Happiness radiates through cheerfulness and enthusiasm. Although
happiness may be a common word, it is often quite tricky to define or explain
“Happiness”.

Everyone wants to be happy
Who
doesn’t want to be happy? Everybody on earth wants happiness, whether one is a
baby or an adult, be it man or a woman, Indian or American, black or white, or
rich or poor, who doesn’t want to be happy? Everybody alive on this planet
seeks happiness. Not just human being, it seems even animals wants to be happy.
We see that dogs wag its tail in joy, birds fly in the sky, fish swirl in the
water, and the peacock open their wings to dance in bliss. Don’t you think they
all seek happiness too? Everybody wants to be happy.

If
you were to ask different people around the globe, what they are seeking, you
would get different answers from each one. But if you further ask them, why
they are seeking it, you would get a common answer from all- “Happiness”. The
goal of life is happiness. Everyone wants to be happy, and people do different
things to achieve this one objective. To a businessman, a successful business
brings happiness. To artists, it may be a creative product that is born out of
their imagination. A student may be happy with excellence in exams, just as a
politicians is blissful on winning an election. We all do different things, but
whatever we do, the goal is one: We all want to be happy!

If you have not learnt anything, but have
learnt one thing that the goal of life is to be happy, you have learnt
everything!
” - RVM
