My Review:

This is my first children's e-book. I have a 5 year old kid and I planned to read this to him by showing illustrations. Story is about Larry, who saved the Prairie and the wild life living there. It talks about the importance of wild life in keeping our eco-system  balanced. 

Two black tailed prairie dogs - Angus and Annabelle narrate the story on how Larry saved the wild life. There was a tradition of poisoning the Prairie to kill wild animals. Larry fights against this killing of animals in Prairie and explains the benefits of wild animals in our ecosystem. This story tells us the importance of preserving wild life. As the author mentions, it's based on the real story of Mr.Larry Haverfield. 

Illustrations are appealing for children and good. But, this is not for year old kid as terms are quite difficult to explain for that age group. It might be good for 7 to 10 years old. 

My Rating: 3/5
I would recommend this to children in the age group of around 6 to 7 years old.

About the Author:
Matt Bergles is a Colorado native who grew up in Pueblo, Colorado. He earned a bachelor's degree in social science from CSU-Pueblo, his master's degree in U.S. history, and a Ph.D. in public affairs at CU Denver, as well as a certificate in alternative dispute resolution. 

Matt currently teaches at a K-8 private school in Denver, where he has witnessed firsthand young, inner-city kids' curiosity and love of animals and nature, observing that every time they are asked what community service project or charitable cause they'd like to be involved with, most K-3 students pick something related to domestic animals or wildlife. This natural love and curiosity led Matt to write Larry Saves the Prairie for young children.

Matt is an independent researcher and advocate for wildlife conservation, especially conservation of prairie habitat. Matt lives in Denver with his wife, Kate, two children, Luke and Mary, and dog Samuel. He is a volunteer coach, a private pilot, and has helped teach his teenage son to fly.

My Review:

I always love suspense and enjoy reading them. I completed this book in one go, it's interesting and a short read with around 115 pages. I got a feeling as if I am watching a thrilling movie while reading this. 

As blurb mentions, it's about a vacation gone bad for a couple Rayanne and Owen. Rayanne is in depression due to her son Conor's demise and Owen lost his job and doesn't want to work under his wife's father. Both are having a difficult time in terms of their relationship even though they love each other a lot. Rayanne wants to forget the past and enjoy time with her husband on this vacation. The story is about the attack of some strangers on the couple for some valuable thing that they possess, which they are unaware of till some point of time and the fight for their survival. While they plan to protect themselves from attackers and a dangerous dog Luger, both understand how much they love each other.

A true thriller, sets a stage, allows us to understand characters and emotions, then reveals a plot and at last, connects all the dots to clear the confusion. This book does all the above. It maintains the fast pace, which is a must for a thriller. Characterization is good, as i can understand the emotions of Rayanne after losing her son due to a mistake that she did. Owen's best friend Daryl shares a secret on what he stole from Owen before he dies, which gives an important twist to the story. Owen's and Daryl's friendship and Owen's love to Rayanne are portrayed well in the story. Flow is smooth and doesn't get boring.

Overall, it's a great read and I would recommend this to the lovers of suspense stories and also for those who like to read a quick novel.

Rayanne heard the kids’ voices, and she looked again at the old cars in the bottom of the ditch. The first thing that came to mind was rattlesnakes. But she knew she couldn’t think of that right now.

         She got up and headed for the rusted jeep. The hood was gone and it looked like a corpse left to rot in the sun. She glanced at the other cars. There was a hatchback with no doors. A pickup was off to one side, on blocks. The wheels had been removed and the driver’s side door thrown open and left to hang. There was a yellow Volkswagen Beetle half buried in the dirt.

Brown and yellow weeds sprouted up between the wrecks, but the ground was hard and Rayanne knew she had no choice. She raced past the rusting jeep, watching where she stepped.

         She moved to the shell of a Volkswagen Beetle. It had two doors. She forced the passenger side open and looked into the dark interior. The overhead lining draped down like a misty shroud. Weeds had grown through the undercarriage and overtaken the floorboards. But two front seats and a long backseat remained. It could be a hiding place, she thought, and squeezed herself into the backseat. She cowered as low as she could.

         She held her breath and prayed there was nothing living inside.

         She shut her eyes and listened. The teens’ voices grew louder. They sounded like they were coming down into the hollow and she could hear Scut—or was it Roddy—say something about the cars. He sounded excited.

         Dru was farther away. Rayanne could hear her calling the dog. Perhaps she didn’t want to walk down into the dump. It didn’t matter. Rayanne knew Scut and Roddy already had.

         Their voices echoed, slipping between the cars. One of them said something about the pile of tires and the other laughed. She could hear them moving about, throwing rocks on metal remains until they stopped right in front of the Volkswagen.

         Rayanne stopped breathing.

         “She’s hidden here somewhere,” Scut was saying. He threw another rock and it hit the bumper. The sound reverberated through the Volkswagen, and Rayanne shivered.

“Naaaah,” Roddy said. It sounded like he was walking away. “I don’t think so. She’s a woman. She ain’t gonna come down here.”

         “We’re not leav’n till we search every car.” Scut sounded like he was stepping away too. She could hear him throwing rocks at other cars now.

            Rude Roddy was saying something when one of them screamed. For a second Rayanne thought Dru had made her way down into the dump. She was surprised to learn it was Scut.

         “There’s a rattler! There’s a rattler!” Scut’s high-pitched wail echoed through the hollow, and she heard what sounded like some kind of skirmish. Perhaps an avalanche of gravel rolled down the slopes of the hollow, like marbles beneath their feet.

         “I hate snakes! I hate ’em!” Scut’s voice rapidly moved away, and it sounded as far as Dru’s now. The girl asked them what was wrong.

            They had to have climbed out of the hollow, Rayanne thought. She opened her eyes. She wanted to poke her head up, but didn’t dare.
