Author Interview:

1.     Hi Sarah, read your earlier harmony run series, which is a dystopian fantasy. The current book 'The Last Vacation' looks like a thriller. Which genre do you like to write?

I like to read and write in both dystopian and suspense. I prefer the freedom of writing fantasy and dystopian because I can make my own rules in the world I create, but I like the challenge of writing suspense.

2.     I know, it's very difficult to build the plot without giving any clue till the end to make it a suspense. How do you start and organize your thoughts when writing a novel?

I try to make a timeline and slowly fill in the events. I like to start with the big picture and build from there. So I might start with writing down some of the major plot points or themes. I write down anything that comes to mind throughout the process, from where a character was born to which ending would fit the story best.

3.     Other than writing, what hobbies do you enjoy? How would you love to spend your free time?
When I am not writing, I love to read, take photographs outdoors, and hang out with my family. If I had more free time, I’d probably sleep. But then again, I’d probably end up writing more if I had actual free time.

4.     Which travel destination do you like on any day to travel and relax?

I’ve lived in thirteen cities, within the U.S.A. and internationally, since I graduated from the university in 2001. My family goes out of town often, so if I could go anywhere to relax, I would go to my mother’s house in Indiana. I’d visit with my grandmother and mother, read, and take a lot of naps. I know…I am boring. But there is nothing like being home.

5.     Did you ever face writer's block? If so, How did you come out of it?

Sure, I’ve been there. When I am stuck and can’t figure out where my story is going or where to begin, I write poetry. It takes my mind in a different direction and gives me a moment to regroup. I also like to read in a variety of genres, especially if I am in a writing funk. Reading other stories helps me relax and refresh.

Thanks for taking time out in replying to my questions.

My pleasure. Thanks for having me!

Excerpt

The line of club members was out the door. Sequoia Country Club’s pro shop was under siege from filthy-rich golfers—club initiation fees had recently topped three hundred thousand dollars—wanting the newly arrived, multicolored umbrellas. Part of the reason for the unusual customer demand was a steady rain that had swept across the peninsula in the early morning hours. Another was the genius of shop manager Bo Granger, who’d paid a meteorologist out of his own pocket for a long-range forecast the week before. Even though April was still considered the rainy season in the Bay Area, he’d gambled on a big storm hitting precisely on the morning of the club invitational, which boasted a field of 150 golfers. He’d ordered three-dozen of the splashy Leroy Neiman–like designer umbrellas that featured a well in the shaft suitable for housing airplane-sized bottles of booze. He’d been smart, too, in sending e-mail notices to all members announcing his upcoming rainy-day special. Bo figured the huge run on club merchandise was going to be a hit with his new general manager.

Bo had been with the club a little over four years. He’d felt secure enough in his position to warrant this bravado with the umbrellas. Even at a discounted seventy-five dollars a pop, he stood to rake in sales of $2,700 if he could unload three dozen. It was not yet nine thirty in the morning, and he’d sold twenty-four.

Bo was well regarded by the majority of the club’s 550 members, most of them Silicon Valley millionaires. In addition to being a shrewd buyer and mover of golf merchandise, he was very likeable. He had a way of making every club member who came into his shop feel special—especially the good-looking women. He’d almost married one of the better-looking ones, Sally Anne Perkins. She was the daughter of a venture capitalist and had graduated a few years back from the prestigious Stevenson College in New Hampshire with a degree in “green anything.” During the time Bo dated her, she didn’t work; in fact she’d never had a job—didn’t need one with Daddy’s money. She mostly stayed at home and watched game shows. Despite her abundant free time, she didn’t volunteer much—the annual beach cleanup along the San Martin County coastline being the exception. After dating for a year and a half, they broke up. Sally Anne had caught Bo tossing recyclable materials into the garbage yet again. She took a picture of him in the act and posted it on Instagram with the tag, “Should I marry a man who’s this insensitive to our carbon footprint?” She received 547 responses saying no.

Bo got his name from his younger sister. She couldn’t say Robert—it came out Bobo—so his parents went with the abbreviation. Bo’s personality was pleasing. He’d been brought up to be liked by Elaine, a housewife, and Steven Granger, a Walgreen’s pharmacist. “Pleasing people will get you further in life than any degree,” his father had preached. Life with Elaine and Steven was vanilla. Steven made him join the Boy Scouts; Elaine made him play the piano. The most childhood excitement Bo could remember was a road trip to LA where he and his sister, Bobbie, were treated to entire days at Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm.

Bo attended Lowell High School in San Francisco, where he failed to distinguish himself as either an exceptional student or athlete—although he did play number three on the golf team—but as a senior was voted Best Personality over a guy who went on to be a nationally recognized comedian.

Bo attended San Francisco State and got his BA in business in four years. It wasn’t until his junior year that he figured out what he wanted to do with his life. He played for State’s golf team and set his mind to becoming a PGA instructor after he graduated. He figured he could make a good living at it and be exposed to beautiful women who were eager for him to teach them the game. Part of that reasoning was fostered by his good looks. His dark, wavy hair, movie-star-like strong jawline, and penetrating hazel eyes had served him well with college co-eds. He’d left a trail of brokenhearted young girls behind him at State. One of his rejections was good-looking enough to land spots in two different national TV commercials. “I dated the Chick-fil-A girl,” he was proud of saying.

Unfortunately, Bo never reached his goal of being a PGA-sanctioned teaching pro—three times he’d failed at putting together the requisite successive rounds of eighty-two or better. That was the golf world’s equivalent of “three strikes and you’re out.” His last opportunity to qualify was at the California Club in South San Francisco. Bo had carded an eighty and an eighty-two on his first two rounds. He was confident that he could post one more round under eighty-two—too confident. His premature celebration the night before his final round did him in. He wasn’t normally a cocktail drinker—he mostly stuck with beer—but the vodka gimlets he was offered by a fellow competitor’s caddy in the club’s bar went down way too easily and too often. By eight o’clock that evening, he had to be carried into the men’s locker room, where club members constructed a bed out of bench pads and left him there to sleep it off. It didn’t help that Bo had an eight o’clock tee time in the morning. It was the par-three, two-hundred-yard twelfth hole that killed him. Sitting at seven over par through eleven holes, he was just three strokes under the dreaded eighty-two-stroke maximum.

Excerpt:
Helen looked at her daughter with heartache. There was no denying it. Marion had indeed become a beautiful young woman. Her eyes sparkling, her skin smooth, a flawless complexion, life bursting out of a perfect body, all the energy and vitality of her seventeen years was translated in her every movement.
“Mom! Say something! Please! If you're so afraid of him, I'll tell him. I can't take this anymore. Anyway, there won't be a problem for getting home after the party. Lucy and her parents are going. I'll go with them and I'll sleep over at Lucy's. There is no reason for dad to be against it.”
Helen understood perfectly well why her daughter wanted so badly to go to the party. Her rebellion was understandable. But she also knew that what her daughter considered the unreasonable whims of a tired and bitter man, were in fact a little more complicated than that.
Helen had become small and muted over the years. The light in her deep, troubling eyes had gone out long ago. The woman who had loved to laugh, filling the room with joy, was now trapped in walls of silence, weighed down with a burden she would never get rid of.
“Marion, believe me, I understand your frustration. But you know how your father is. It's only going to cause a fight if you insist.”
“You're afraid of him, Mom! You've always been afraid, haven't you? Good God! He's your husband! You've got to be able to stand up to him for once. It's as if you owe him your life or something. It's unbelievable!”
But that was exactly the problem. Perhaps Helen didn't owe him her life, but she felt she owed him nonetheless. She had made a mistake and she would always have to make up for it. She could not stand up to him or even annoy him.
“Fine! Looking at your worried and anxious face, I'll take care of it myself!”
Marion stormed off to her room, determined to not give in this time. She left her mother alone with her thoughts and her sadness, to not be able to stand up for the daughter she loved and offer her a happier and easier life.

Later that evening, as usual, Marion heard her father come in. She ran down the stairs to speak with him before he sprawled out on the living room couch, falling asleep for the night.
He was so predictable and the opportunities to talk with him were so rare. His presence in the house was felt solely when he exercised an overbearing authority. He never showed Marion any affection, never an “I love you, Marion, my little girl.”
John hung up his old gray overcoat on the hall-stand in the entrance way. In fact, the worn-out topcoat was the only thing he took off when he came into the house. Most of the time he did not even bother to undress before passing out on the couch.
          “Dad...?” Marion hesitated.
“Hey, you're still up? It's late. You should be in bed.”
Marion did not back down. She stood in front of him, watching him, wondering what he did when he was out so late, why he came home drunk every night. He reeked of alcohol. She could smell it from across the room. He was no longer a man. He was an empty soul, a distant gaze, the lines in his face carved out by suffering and bad living, a complete waste of a life.
“I know, Dad. I was waiting up for you. I wanted to ask you something.”
Marion felt intimidated by this man who always had an imposing and powerful air about him.
“Yes? What is it? I'm tired. I'm going lie down.”
John turned his back on his daughter, as usual, as always, to go stretch out on the living room couch.
“Dad, I'd like to go to a party in town on Saturday night and...”
John stood up furiously, glaring threateningly into Marion's eyes.
          “No way! You hear me?”
“But Dad! I'm going to be eighteen years old. I'm no longer a child and I need to experience all the things the world has to offer at my age.”
“Oh really? Going out to a party all dressed up like a whore, that's what you need to experience?”
Helen had gotten up. Of course she hadn't been able to sleep. Worried about her daughter, she stood quietly against the living room door.
“How can you call me a whore? You don't even trust your own daughter, and you want to know why? Because you've done nothing but drink all these years, forgetting I even exist. You don't know me at all!”
John's temper snapped at the insult from Marion who was now sobbing. Lunging out, he slapped her so hard she fell to the floor.
Shocked, Marion did not get up, holding her head between her hands. She did not understand what was happening. Of all the things he had done in the past, he had never hit her before.
All of a sudden John's eyes were no longer empty. Filled with hatred and rage, he raised a trembling hand above Marion, ready to hit again, if it had not been for Helen who stepped in to face him.
How dare she defy him? She who had never stood up to him. She who owed him everything. Consumed with rage, he forgot Marion. But this small insignificant woman, she was going to pay for all the years of torment and silence.
Helen saw in her husband's eyes all the hatred he felt for her and all the bitterness. But no matter what, she had to protect her daughter. Marion would not pay for the mistakes of the past.
 About the Author:

Poetry was my first discovery and my first passion. Putting words together that, in theory, did not go together, giving them breath, a new life, was a revelation for me. Yet despite this, my imagination tormented my mind. The desire to go further, to be able to create characters, to give them a destiny, emotions, an imaginary reality, illuminated my literary path.
Thus, “Dark Secrets of the Past” was born, a book which made me tremble many times while writing.
Carried away by this momentum, I could not return to my poems. This experience gave me the certainty that what I truly want to do is write passionate stories in order to share them with readers.
I hope this book carries and transports you as far as it did me while I was writing it.

Top 5 things to do in Hyderabad

I have been in this city since 8 years, but couldnt roam well or visit many places. From everything that I saw / experienced in this city, here are the top 5 things I love in Hyderabad.

1. Don't miss The famous Dum-ki-Biryani

Most of you might know this already that Hyderbad is famous for mutton -dum-ki-biryani, basmati rice cooked with spices and mutton. Paradise and Bavarchi are considered the best restaurants for non veg biryani and since I am a vegeteria, I love veg biryani from Alpha hotel, Secunderabad.

2. Visit historic places

There are many historic places in the city, starting from Charminar, Golkonda, Taramati Bardari, Qutub shahi tombs, Chowmahalla palace, Taj Falaknuma palace etc., If you have more time and patience and if you are a history lover and love to know the heritage of the city, you will enjoy the best.

3. Taste the World famous Haleem

I am a vegeterian and I never tasted this. But, heard that Hyderabadi Haleem is very tasty that it gets exported to foreign countries as well. Haleem is a stew composed of meat, lentils and pounded wheat made into a thick paste. It is usually prepared in ramzaan month. It was originally a Arab dish and might have been introduced by Nizams to the city.

4. Drive on Necklace road

It is a wonderful experince to drive on Necklace road and enjoy boating till Budha statue. Hussain sagar stinks to some extent which is the only problem. Also, visit to Birla mandir temple and planetorium is a must.

5.  Go for Shopping

With rich heritage and culture, you can guess how it would be to shop in Hyderabad. I am not very much into shopping, but I know some good places to shop in Hyderabad. Laad bazaar near Charminar is famous for bangles, pearls and artifical jewellery. Koti, Sultan Bazaar, Badichowdi, Begum bazaar etc, are some more places to visit for shopping.

Linking this to Friday Reflections hosted by Mackenzie and Janine every friday.

Writing this post for the prompt 'What are the top 5 things to do in the city you live?'

There are many more places that I love in Hyderabad like Shilparama, Durgam cheruvu, Gandipet Lake, Lumbini park, Inorbit mall etc., saving them for the next time :-)

Until next time,

I don't wear Sunscreen by Kavipriya Moorthy - [Book Review]

Book Details:

Title: I don't Wear Sunscreen
Author: Kavipriya Moorthy
Publishers: Notion press
No of pages: 112
Genre: Fiction
Source : A free e-copy from the author

Blurb:

For Laksha, life is a gift wrapped in red ribbon. But that's all shattered when she falls for a misogamist. His ambivalence and vacillation always keeps her at bay, turning her into a neurotic. She gets betrayed by the most credible, loses her job, feels devastated and dejected as incidents crowd upon her corrupting her naiveté.

Enigmas unfold revealing every glitch. Who will clear her blurred skies? What invigorates her career and life? Will she ever forgive her beloved? And how will Laksha survive?

The story also revolves around her rapport with Pallavi, a childhood friend and the relationship she has with her silver-tongued mom. Focusing on how experiences change perception of little things, this contemporary tale gives a better meaning to friendships, relationships, solitude, pain, compassion and success.

More often than not, Life drags you down to the adversities and thrusts outward to shine. It is your grit that truly matters when you reach rock bottom, and left with no choice other than to pick yourself up and leap forward, however arduous it may be!

My Review:

The blurb and the title of the book tempted me to read this. I like contemporary fiction. So, I expected it to be a contemporary novel with some twists and it didn't disappoint me.

The first half of the book is very casual introducing the characters of Laksha and Pallavi. I could relate to the possessiveness that Laksha has towards her best friend Pallavi. it reminded me of my best friends. The story has many things - friendship, betrayal, sacrifice, depression etc., I liked Laksha's mom and her positive attitude. Until the start of second half there are no twists in the story and it is predictable. But, the pace of the story increases all of a sudden and it led to some confusion due to the sudden changes in circumstances. I was totally confused after reading 'the end' and the epilogue was helpful to connect the dots.

Character portrayal is a major plus for this book. The plot seemed interesting in the starting, but led to confusion at the end. The narration is good , but can be still improved. There are some typos which might have been avoided. I appreciate kavipriya for her excellent debut and wish her all the best.

A few lines from the book :

Life is never easy; there will be one issue after another to test your nerves. It might be beloved’s death, a severe health problem, career stumbles, breakups, divorces, loneliness, and anything else. Be strong and make sure your days mean something, find out what helps you grow towards fulfilling your satisfaction.
Sometimes to cry, doesn’t mean you are weak, it means you are stronger letting go of things that hurt you.

Overall, a good read with some unexpected twists in the story.

My Rating: 3.5/5

EXCERPT

“Where should we start?” Miranda asked, looking at the collection of weird objects.

“Let's look for the notebook he mentioned then we can start from there.” Zach suggested. Miranda agreed and they began going through some boxes to find it. And find it they did.

After about 15 minutes, Zach yelled, “AHA!” and pulled out a red scientific notebook that said ‘FOR ZACH: INSTRUCTION MANUAL.’

Miranda dropped the things she was going through and hopped over to him as he opened to the first page. “Huh, an ice-cube shooter” he said, flipping to the next page. “A sticky rope swing.” Then he flipped to the next page. “Plip Plap Plop ball” and in fine print under the picture was the note 'it all began with words'.

“HUH!?” Miranda squealed grabbing the notebook and reading the page. She looked at the drawing, then looked around the garage. “There!” she said pointing to the far back corner. There was an interesting clear ball that reminded Miranda of the plastic ball she had for her hamster to run around in. They both walked over to the ball.

“What does it...what do you think it is?” Miranda asked quietly. She reached out her hand slowly to touch the outside and as soon as she laid her fingers on the cool hard ball, Zach grabbed her shoulders from behind and shook her. Miranda jumped from the surprise then laughed as Zach said, “Gotcha!”
“Zach! That wasn’t funny!” she said although she was laughing. But at that same moment, the ball made a tiny 'plip' sound and began to beep.

“What the...?” Zach said as they both stepped backwards.

Miranda bravely leaned forward and covered the beeping light with her finger and the ball again seemed to come to life as they heard the sound “plip! plap! plop!”

Then all of a sudden the ball went from clear to pearly blue. Zach and Miranda felt their stomach rising, like you do when you are at the top of a high rollercoaster. Then after a moment, they were in a bakery. Miranda looked around and saw a funny sort of writing on the jars.

“All the jars have Swedish writing on them. I think that’s Swedish…” she said.

“Swedish? Could we be in Sweden?... How!? ” Zach said, alarmed.

“Or at least we are in a Swedish bakery store somewhere.” Miranda quickly noted.

They heard a noise coming from behind the  bricked wall. “I think someone must be baking something over there.” Miranda could smell cinnamon rolls on her breath.

The two crept silently to see a little, old, blonde woman leaning over the hearth. She was pulling out a roll that smelled of ginger and cinnamon.  They watched as she set it down to cool and stared at it.

A little girl appeared from the stairs on the other side of the kitchen. She was reciting a phrase that she may have just learned.

"See Nana's bun! See Nana's bun, the little girl recited over and over again. The blond lady smiled at the young girl and then seemed to freeze in a moment.

She jumped very quickly and started running around searching frantically for something.

“Where is my pen?” She yelled.

"I need to write this down, oh, angel you are a genius!" she said excitedly referring to the little girls' rant. We shall call it 'Seenanasbun'. Zach had seen enough. He motioned for Miranda to go back to the ball which was now clear again. Miranda approached and touched the ball, the ball came to life.

The two held onto the ball and plip plap plop, within a minute they were back in the garage again. Miranda and Zach couldn’t believe what had just happened. Had they really just teleported to another place and time?

“What just happened?” Miranda asked, still in shock, “is that ball a...you know?”

“I might be crazy, but I think we may have a teleporting ball,” Zach exclaimed. They both sat in silence for what felt like an eternity, but was actually only a couple minutes when Miranda said, “Want to try it again?”
