San Antonio Missions - A photo tour #MondayMusings

San Antonio is a historical place. It played a significant role when the Republic of Texas is formed and later when it became a state in the United States of America.

The historic Payaya Indians used to live here at San Antonio River which they called 'Yanaguana'. In late 1716, Spanish people from missionaries in Mexico arrived here, and thus Spanish settlement started. They started the mission 'Mission De Valero', which is known as 'Alamo' now. They constructed other missions as well and converted the natives to Catholics and taught them to live as Spaniards to keep them under the control of Spain.

Later, when Mexico is liberated from Spain rule, the Republic of Texas is formed and The Alamo actually served as a battled field for the liberation of Texas. Thus, San Antonio also got the name 'The Alamo City'. In 1845, the Unites states included Texas as a state in the Union.

San Antonio Missions

The tour of San Antonio's missions covers the above history. Now, let me take you through the photo tour :-)

The Alamo, from where the City got the name

Mission Conception

The missions of San Antonio are far more than churches. They are communities. We can see mud houses where the natives lived, the old churches, farms, and ranch.

More than a church, Mission Conception was also a village, fort, school, farm, and ranch. Though the missions are ruined to some extent with time, archeologists were successful in preserving the old paintings on the walls as well.

Sorry for the long shot, It's Mission San Jaun

Beautiful carvings at Mission San Jose

Mission SanJose, loved the carvings
Out of all missions, Mission San Jose is beautiful. The carvings are preserved till this time. The church is great but photography is not allowed inside without special permission from Paster.

San Antonio's mission is a world heritage site. All the missions are covered along the path of 13 miles and it is difficult to cover all of them on the same day if it is hot summer. It might take around 4 hours to cover all these by car by stopping at each mission for at least 30 mins. The missions are open from 9 am to 5.30 pm daily. The Mission Alamo, is open till 8 pm now in summer. Check this official site for more information.

A Fun Weekend at Yanaguana Gardens, San Antonio

The 4.1 acre Yanaguana Gardens is at Hemisfair which is very close to the 750-foot tall attraction 'Tower of Americas' in San Antonio. The entry is not free and it can be visited with the entry ticket for 'Tower of Americas'.Last weekend, 'Our Kids' magazine kicked off their event 'Kidcation Week' in the park making the entry free to the public.
The garden has a variety of play structures to climb, slide and swing. There is a sand pit and Splash pad too, which are perfect for a summer afternoon.

The design of the park is different. There are wooden chairs to relax and a pool deck to have snacks under the shade. The pigeons and other birds roam freely around the park.
I couldn't take many photos of Splash pad, but the kids as well as the adults can chill under these splash pads in hot summer. It will be bright lit in the evening, especially the splash pad which jets sprouts of water with lights is amazing.

So, that was about the fun afternoon on a Saturday.

The Japanese Tea Garden, San Antonio - WT Festival #Day2

This post may contain affiliate links, clicking on those links may earn some commission to us without any additional cost to you.

There are many tourist places in San Antonio with free admission. One of those is The Japanese tea garden in Breckenridge park.

This place is also known as Sunken garden / Chinese tea garden. It was opened in the early 20th century which was an abandoned limestone rock quarry as per the Wikipedia. It is listed in US National register for historic places. During the world war II,  It was renamed to Chinese Tea gardens to avoid destruction.

Japanese Tea Garden, San Antonio

We have decided to visit the place with kids after reading the reviews about the waterfall and a pond with fishes there. What's fun than going to a water body to cool off the scorching heat in summer? Monsoons started in India and we miss rains after coming here.

The garden is open between 9am to 5pm. But, the Sun won't set till 7 pm here. So, visiting a place before 5 pm is like walking in the afternoon heat. We applied enough sunscreen and insect repellent to start the walk.

The place has a nice garden, a cafe, a pond with many fishes, lot of trees and shade, a waterfall and a wooden bridge. The waterfall is not that great but kids enjoyed watching fish in the pond. The place is great to take photos and have a walk under trees. We expected it to be a big garden but it didn't take more than an hour to walk around.

It would have been great if they change closing time to 8pm in summer. This place is wonderful to sit and relax with cool breeze hitting on the face in the evenings. Since this place is near Breckenridge park and San Antonio zoo, we can cover those too. Don't miss the train ride in Breckenridge park if you have kids!

There are many fantastic places around which I will be visiting soon, so please stay tuned for more info in my blog ☺

Until next time,

Top 5 Tourist places in San Antonio, Texas

Hello.. June is the great outdoors month!

No wonder! it's my birthday month too.. I love travelling and outdoors :-)

It's been 2 months I am staying in San Antonio and I did some research on the best tourist places that suit my taste and are kid-friendly.

Here is a quick list...

Pin it for later!

1. The River walk

When I search for popular places in San Antonio, this suggestion comes up first. There are shops, eateries along the river walk. It's a good area to explore and have fun time with friends. I visited this place on a weekend and it doesn't sound to be a good option. It is very crowded and there is barely any space to walk.

2. The Alamo and Mission San Jose

The Alamo is the most visited historic spot which is at the heart of San Antonio. This is a memorial of heroes died in 1836 battle. 300- year old Spanish fortress is the main attraction. Mission San Jose has old Spanish built churches and a museum. The buildings are very good to explore and enjoy photography.

3. The Tower of the Americas

This 750 feet tall structure gives a fantastic view of the Alamo city (If you are wondering, what is Alamo city, San Antonio is also known as the Alamo city). It has an observation deck, revolving eatery, and 4D adventure ride. Ticket price is $12 for adults and $9 for children. Please check the official website for more information.

4. Natural Bridge Caverns

These natural caves under 60 foot limestone bridge are one of the most popular natural tourist destination to explore. There are 2 tours - discovery and hidden passages tour to explore. Please check this site for more information on timings and ticket prices.

5. San Antonio Botanical garden and Japanese tea garden
I have mixed both of them as they are not very far. Japanese tea garden is also known as Sunken garden, which is an open air venue for theater and events in Brackenridge park. It is like a small garden with a pond, water fall and fishes. San Antonio botanical garden has different types of gardens and it is a wonderful place to visit with kids.It is a serene spot with pond and trails. These both gardens are free attractions open till 5 PM. We can also cover San Antonio zoo and Brackenridge park on the same day though it will be tiring.

There are many other places too like Seaworld, Six flags, San antonio museum, Mc nay museum, Children's museum etc.,

Also, check latest local deals in groupon:
