Chapter 2

In the quaint, historic city of Murrell’s Inlet, South Carolina, at the onset of a torrential downpour, thirty-five-year-old detective Art Somers rolled up the driver’s side window of his blue, classic Camaro and turned on his wipers. He took inventory of himself in his rearview mirror: his black mane of shoulder-length hair that offset his olive skin, the shadow of a beard that now graced his face, and more troubling, his bloodshot eyes. He hadn’t slept much lately and it showed. How much longer was it going to take the FBI boys to capture the serial nutcase operating in their midst?

Within a span of twenty-one days, someone had kidnapped and slaughtered multiple twelve-year-old boys in his county and eluded all capture efforts. He gripped his steering wheel tighter. The only good news, if you could call it that, was that the bastard hadn’t struck in Murrell’s Inlet.

He stared at his former neighbor’s sons, who were playing a game of pickup football on the dirt field to his left. One of those boys—or even his own son, Ben—could be the killer’s next target if Murrell’s Inlet became one of his cities of choice. He breathed deep. Not even the fishy fragrance of the nearby Atlantic waters he loved so much, did anything to improve his frame of mind.

A cluster of lightning bolts illuminated the darkened, cloud-filled morning sky, followed immediately by booming thunder that echoed in the distance. Overhead, seagulls darted away as the winds picked up.

Every locale within his county was on edge because the killer only struck within the confines of Georgetown County and always in a different city. For all he knew, his town could be next. He reached over to his front passenger seat and rested his palm on the printout of the FBI serial profiling article. Under captain’s orders, every detective in the station house had spent the past two weeks boning up on the behavior patterns of serial killers.

He flexed the muscles in his arms and looked at his Navy SEAL tattoos. He had no clue what to do if that sick bastard showed up in Murrell’s Inlet. He was too new at being a detective and some were questioning why the captain had promoted him in the first place. Following up on an obscure lead, he’d taken the initiative and pursued and captured a couple of long-sought backwater drug dealers, a feat that catapulted him from the rank and file into the role he now held.

Another contributing factor for his promotion could’ve been that his captain was also a former Navy SEAL. Reading the FBI profiling article hadn’t made him feel any better. He hoped he’d never cross paths with the sick freak.

He wheeled his Camaro into the driveway of his former home, a light green, two-story, southern vernacular. It had a pool in the backyard that he’d put in himself. He sat behind the wheel for a moment under the overhanging branches of the angel hair oak tree his ex-wife had planted long ago in honor of their son Ben’s birth.

He ran his hands through his long, wavy hair and climbed out, wearing worn, faded jeans and a burgundy T-shirt that worked well with his muscular, tanned frame. The rain soaked him as he jogged through the piles of wet leaves that covered the lawn. He stepped onto the covered porch and was about to knock when Judith, his ex-wife, swung the door open.

His son, Ben, with dark hair and piercing, dark eyes just like his, dressed in his white baseball uniform with burgundy letters that read Gamecocks, dashed by him toward the car carrying his cell phone. “Hey, Dad.”

“Whoa. Hey, Sport. If this rain doesn’t break, they may cancel the game.”

“Let’s go,” Ben said and climbed into the front passenger seat.

Judith stood in the doorway in a revealing pink nightie. She was breathing heavily, as though she’d just finished a vigorous workout. She was thirty-four, with shoulder-length blond hair and enough sexual energy to raise the dead. “It’s about time you showed up. Benjamin is being disrespectful to my guest.”

“A killer who’s randomly taking boys our son’s age is kind of a priority, don’t you think?”

“You don’t even know if he’ll come this way,” Judith said.

“A good scout is always prepared.”

“Maybe you should prepare by going to church sometimes and praying about it.”

“I’ll pretend that church means something to you, just as soon as you stop placing hairs of your enemies in those jars of yours.”

A young black man with a shaved head and chiseled body—and more than likely the source of Judith’s workout—joined her at the door. He expanded his chest and stood straight at the sight of Art.

Art shook his head. Yet another boy-toy around his son. “You think Ben’s disrespect has something to do with your choice of guests?” He frowned. “Let him come live with me.”

She stared at him. “I told you, I need the child support—and I’d miss him.”

“Two years of monthly child support checks—even if he’s with me.”

There was a moment of silence as Judith seemed to consider his offer. She glanced at her boy-toy, whose arm now rested across her shoulder. “We’ll be back from vacation soon.”

“Think about my offer.”

She kissed her boy-toy deeply, pursed her lips at Art, and then slammed the door in his face.

“Bitch,” he said under his breath to the closed door. What in hell had he been thinking having unprotected sex with her? He strode back to his car, climbed in, and screeched his tires as he backed out of the driveway. He turned on his windshield wipers and tore off down the wet street. He glanced at his son, who was watching him. He slowed to the posted speed limit.

Ben tossed the FBI serial profiling article in his lap onto the backseat. He pulled his cell phone out of his front pocket and pressed buttons. He rocked his head back and forth to his music selection. “What were you and Mom talking about?”

Art glanced at Ben. “Life, son—things you deal with in life.”

“Mom said call him ‘Dad.’”

Art pressed the brake pedal, coming to a complete stopped in the middle of the street. He stared at his son. “Who?”

“Her new boyfriend, Clarence.”

Art tensed. He pressed the gas and proceeded down the road. “I’m your father.”

“I know, Dad.”

They rode on in silence. His son’s words had cut deep.

Can Angrail find love in the arms of a demoness at war with herself? Or will the secrets hidden within the bowels of their worlds destroy them before they can find peace?

Book Links:

Read an Excerpt:

Angrail moaned, agony flowing like water through him. He could
taste the souls wanting peace, hear their weak cries, but could do nothing.
Shifting, the wounds he'd suffered screamed in protest, pain lacing through his
muscles.

Inhaling a sharp breath, he froze. The sweetness of a
strange smell stirred something within him. Blood, bone, life clung to whoever
hovered nearby. The smell of smoke, of flame swirled in the air as well.
Cracking his eyes open, he blinked to clear his vision and tensed.

Bronze skin glistening in the fading sunlight, a female
stood at the mouth of the cave. Her arms were crossed beneath her breasts, a
sword hanging at her hip. Multi-toned hair was slicked back, revealing the
ornately decorated curve of a horn. She was a huntress. But why would she have
removed him from the battlefield? None of her kind, or his own brethren, were
allowed to touch him. Nerafail's generosity had bound them to watch him suffer.
Aye, the old lord was a fool, one he had no desire to seek forgiveness from.

"What…" Licking his dry lips, he struggled into a
sitting position. His head swam with the effort, his stomach revolting at the
pain swarming him. "What do you have need of me?"

"You are awake. Excellent." The demoness turned,
her eyes narrowed on him. "What do I have need with you? I should hope you
have such an answer for me, guide."

Coughing, Angrail leaned his head against the stone, his
chest tight, burning with the need for oxygen. Being trapped within the mortal
frame had its drawbacks. "Who are you? Nerafail would not permit you to
aid me."

"Aid? I have no desire to aid you. I wish to know why
you called me back from my task." She stalked to him, her hips swaying.
Hunkering down by his feet, she tilted her head. "I was sent forth to
retrieve a soul and had nearly done that when I felt you. You kept me from leaving
the field, I would know why."

"Go to Hardress." Angrail winced. "Back to
your revelry and—"

"I would go home, but you refuse to release your
bonds. You will tell me what I wish to know." She slammed him into the
rock, her fingers tightening around his throat.

With her touch, Angrail's body arched, gasping for air as
pain and heat washed over him in waves. He could feel her grip tightening, feel
the force of her anger, and felt his own stirring.

He blinked, the images dancing in his mind ones he'd never
seen before. Images that instinct told him were important.

Flames danced around them. Sweat beaded and rolled
between her breasts. Her tongue licked at his skin, and her horns flared with
passion. His shaft throbbed in yearning at her body undulating, her hips
gyrating slowly. To and fro, rolling, pitching, she remained in constant
motion, her hands trailing over her flesh, cupping her breasts. Her fingers
plucked at her nipples, pulling on them until they stood hard, pointing toward
him. She shuddered, her hand drifting down her abdomen, slipping beneath the
braided belt of her skirt.

Heady, rich, the scent of her essence filled the air.
Sweeter than honey, it teased along his shaft, filling him with want. Faint,
the echo of her sliding her fingers through the folds between her legs grew in
volume with each slow roll of her hips.

He pushed the images out of his head and shoved her arm
aside, his eyes narrowing. "Careful, huntress, you're showing
weakness."

"Tell me and I'll ease your misery."

"You can't."

Transit Lounge by Sunil Mishra - Book Spot Light

About the Book:

"Transit Lounge" is a contemporary book consisting of short incidents, observations, and reflections while traveling to 30 countries across six different continents during the last 15 years.

The book is a personal account of travels to places in Africa, South America, Asia, Europe, USA, Australia and New Zealand.

It was interesting to observe all these different cultures and people from an Indian perspective. The book is a compilation of small incidents and events during such travels; it includes losing an air ticket, dealing with difficult custom officials or getting mugged in a prime location in a foreign country.

Snippets from Sunil's travel:

One of the most famous things in Copenhagen is legendry sculpture of “the little mermaid”. Arguably it is the most photographed lady on earth. The story goes like the little mermaid falls in love with a prince. She wants to give up her life as a mermaid and live a life like human for the prince to accept her. She goes to a witch and the witch gives her a potion. After drinking the potion the mermaid loses her tongue and becomes mute. She gets the legs, though it pains and bleeds a lot when she walks on the land. The sad end of the story is that the prince does not love her even then and she keeps on waiting.

There have been multiple versions of the stories with some disputes but all agree to the sad end.

A Danish friends told me that the little mermaid would be sent to China that year for some world exhibition. More than anything, he was worried if Denmark will get the same statue back or too many of them given China’s reputation for copy and mass production.

The moment our train entered Venice, the experience was overwhelming. It was like moving into the sea. The great thing about this city is – it is preserved so well and gives a good glimpse of the medieval Europe. It is a totally different way of life in the city.

There are no motor vehicles. The only mode of communication there, are water-taxis that run like bus services in any other city. Most of the house doors and windows open into sea water and the water is unbelievably clean and fresh. It must have been a thriving center of culture, art and religion – it still is. It is also a wonder in town planning and civic amenities.

The city is something that will always leave an imprint on anyone who visits it – there is probably no other city like Venice in the world.

My Body's Mine: A Book on Boundaries and Sexual Abuse Prevention by Kayla - [Book Review]

Book Details:

Title: My Body's Mine: A Book on Boundaries and Sexual Abuse Prevention

Author: Kayla J. W. Marnach
Genre: Educational, Children's book, Parent & Relationships
Publisher: YANA press
Length of the book: 28 pages
Source: A free print copy from the author

Blurb:

My Body's Mine helps children learn they have the rights to their body. Told through rhyme from a child's point of view this book on boundaries empowers each child to say no when others approach them in ways that make them uncomfortable. It also gives clear instructions on what to do if they are approached in an unwanted manner. The questions at the end of the book provides an easy transition for counselors and parents to open a discussion to prevent abuse or to further explore if abuse has occurred.

Purchase Link:

My Review:

The cover of the book and the title attracted me to read this book. I think all parents agree that educating our children from their young age about boundaries and sexual abuse prevention are very important these days. I chose this book as I want to know how to teach a toddler about his body and boundaries

This book is good to teach children as young as 3 years. This book is in a poem format. A few words are repeated to stress the importance like below lines

From head to toe,My Body's mine.I love my bodyand it's all mine.
The words are simple and rhyming. The book teaches about what is ok and what is not when someone touches our body. What should we do when someone touches us in an inappropriate way. This book also talks about whom to trust and who is safe to ask for help.

The bonus/ I would say the most useful section of the book is the questions to discuss with your child. After reading through the book we can ask questions listed at the end of the book to initiate a discussion and know how much they actually understood.

The illustrations by Kate are simple and cute with pleasing light colors. I am sure this book connects to the readers (parents and kids) and helps them to discuss freely on sexual abuse. This book is a part of 'Can-Do' series and I recommend other books in the series as well - "My Actions Matter" and "I Can do that". This series of books sparks conversation with children. They teach positivity helping children to explore ways to learn and manage themselves when they have emotions like disappointment/ anger.

I recommend this book to all parents who want to discuss sexual abuse with children.

My Rating: 5/5

PS: I have received this book from the author in exchange for a review and this is my honest opinion on the book.

5 Best scenic drives in Colorado #SuperBloggerChallenge2018

Travel!!!
Before you run out of time.
If I have a lot of money in hand and no responsibilities, I won't waste a single day without traveling. If you have been following my blog for some time, you already know my craze for travel. Nature offers a lot to us and we only should take the opportunity to experience the beautiful nature. Fortunately, we are in the beautiful mountain state of Colorado and we could cover around 80% of tourist places in this state.

Colorado State is the 8th largest state geographically in the United States of America and it has a diverse landscape like desert, rocky mountains and river. There are a number of scenic drives in the state which should not be missed if you visit Colorado.

Here are the 5 best scenic drives :

1. Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain national park
2. Million dollar highway near Durango
3. Independence Pass near Aspen
4. Pikes Peak highway in Colorado Springs
5. Mt Evans scenic byway near Denver

Now, Let's go into the details..

1. Trail Ridge Road

Trail Ridge Road in Rocky mountain national park is a 48-mile road connecting Estes Park and Grand Lake. This heavily traveled highway in the park goes up to 12,183 feet elevation giving the visitors thrilling views of snow mountains and valleys around. The speed limit is 20 mph and it is fascinating how we climb 4000 ft elevation within minutes. There are some dangerous curves with no support in the edges making it an adventurous drive. Read my Travelogue here.

Views from Trail Ridge Road

2. Million Dollar Highway

The Million Dollar highway (also known as US Highway 550) was built in 1880's as part of San Juan Skyway scenic byway between New Mexico and Colorado. A 25 mile stretch from Silverton and Ouray is the most spectacular route.  We didn't visit this route yet and it is on my wishlist for so long.
There are several hairpin bends and dangerous curves without guardrail on the edges.

3. Independence Pass

Independence Pass also known as Hunter pass is the third highest mountain pass in Colorado as per its elevation which is 12,095 ft. It is on the Continental divide midway between Aspen and Twin Lakes. This is part of Colorado Highway 82 and is busy with visitors in Summer and Fall. It is closed in winter. This 32-mile long stretch offers fantastic scenic beauty. We traveled twice on this route to Aspen and we never want to miss a chance to go again. Read my travelogue about Aspen here.

View from Independence pass in Summer
4. Pikes Peak Highway

This 19-mile highway connects Cascade to Pikes peak Summit which is at an elevation of 14,115 ft above sea level. There are approximately 162 turns on the way. The highway is open year round - weather permitting. The highway entrance itself begins at around 7500 ft and the road climbs to 14,115 ft. On the way, you can stop to catch a glimpse of Crystal reservoir and Devil's playground and take snaps of mountains and valleys. The temperatures drastically change as we go up and we are fortunate to watch a sleet(Rain with snow) when we have driven last time. Find my travelogue here

Amazing turns of Pikes peak highway

5. Mt. Evans Scenic Byway

Mt Evans Scenic Byway is just 60 miles from Denver and it starts at Idaho springs visitor center. This is the highest paved highway in North America. This is the one place where you are not concerned about the destination but enjoy your journey. This is on our wish list for so long. It is closed during winter and opens in Spring. This 15 - mile 2 lane road is also known as 'Road into the sky'. This highway gives breathtaking views of the valleys and mountains climbing to 14,000ft above sea level. Echo Lake and Summit lake on the way are worth a visit.

Gratitude List for March 2018 #GratitudeCircle

March has gone fast.

I was somewhat busy with a coming event to practice dance myself and also to prepare kids for the performance. I am glad to be participating in Super Blogger challenge 2018 and learning a lot of new things about blogging. We celebrated our Telugu New year last month and also another festival "Sri Rama Navami". I could read 5 books too this month which I didn't expect. :-)

So, going into the details.. Here are a few things which I am grateful for in March:

1. Dance Practice

There is an event coming in April in which I am performing a semi-classical and movie dance. I am also teaching 5 to 7-year-olds a medley to perform on stage. Though it is not new to me to perform on stage, the rigorous 4 hrs practice on weekends is making me tired. Of course, it's keeping me in shape :-) Teaching kids needs a lot of patience and I think, I am getting better at managing them gradually. Even though I am getting tired, I feel very happy to be dancing for more time now.

2. Spring break

I am very thankful for one-week spring break. I got up very late every day and it was more relaxing to sleep for more time. We also arranged some play dates and fun activities for our apartment kids and all enjoyed very well.

3. Book Reading

I could finish 5 books this month, which is great. "Poisoning our children" by Andre Leu is a non-fiction book on food safety and myths about pesticides used in agriculture. "Clod makes a friend" by David Pederson is a lovely story for middle graders. "My Prince wears a blue jeans" is a wonderful story about the relationship between a father and daughter. The short biography of Alexander the Great by In60learning is interesting. The Love Lottery by Raj Dhaliwal is a humorous take on Indian marriage and dating.

4. Super Blogger Challenge 2018

I am participating in Super Blogger challenge 2018 hosted by Amrita, Bushra, and Utpal. It is great to participate, read other blogs and learn a lot of things about blogging and social media.

Here are my posts so far published for the challenge, I am very happy to see my page visits going up with this challenge :-)

1. Infused Water and its benefits

2. 5 tools which help me in my regular blogging

3. 5 ways I promote my blog

4. My Childhood Food memories

5. Sri Rama Navami - A festival to celebrate the ideal Lord Rama

6. Winter Fun in Steamboat Springs

So, that is about my March. How did you spend time in March? What are you thankful for? I wish you all a happy April :-)

Until next time,
